The fairy tales written by the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen there are a total of 156, translated into 80 languages. Published between 1835 and 1872, the fairy tales by Andersen are universally famous: The Little Mermaid, The Tin Soldier, The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl and others.
Born in Odense (Denmark), in the poor neighborhoods of the city, on April 2, 1805, he is famous for his fairy tales. Andersen was the son of a street vendor and his entire family lived in one room in absolute poverty, in the house of his maternal grandmother. Perhaps the future writer brilliantly transformed the condition in which he was forced to live in a fairy tale world. In his honor, in 1956, the «Andersen Prize»For youth fiction, which annually awards the best writers of the genre.
“The Ugly Duckling»Is the fairy tale of ‘differences’ or of their acceptance, because differences, in reality, can turn out to be a gift. Just he, Andersen, could have ‘felt’ an Ugly Duckling due to his ‘social condition’ which made him ‘different’, marginalized and excluded, also because of his latent homosexuality.
But here is exclusion and contempt turn into appreciation and respect, when you come across people who know how to appreciate our qualities, our talents. So for those children considered “ugly” by themselves and by others: they will become beautiful as they grow up and this fairy tale is also for them.
Just over the brooding time
the Duck saw the eggs hatch,
he saw the chicks, each beautiful and golden,
but still closed one remained.
When the egg opened, between a long wait,
what a surprise for her little brothers!
Oh, what a strange duckling was born:
awkward, very strange, to seem ill.
“But what Ugly Duckling is this?”
in observing it everyone has asked himself,
it was lumpy like broccoli:
therefore they called him Ugly Duckling.
They also started making fun of him
and to play him some bad trick.
Mother Duck wanted to protect him,
however, he could not stop his brothers.
Ugly Duckling didn’t know what to do,
sad and crying mom went to look
that could soon console him,
mom couldn’t find the remedy.
As if that wasn’t enough, in a pond
the cousin ducks, out of spite,
they made fun of him for his appearance,
and the desolate Ugly Duckling
he came home sad and disconsolate.
Duckling one day put on his head
to run away and then decided,
so as not to be humiliated by the ducks:
– I go to those who know how to appreciate me,
and with those wings he began to fly.
He went neither too high nor far,
landed in a pond strangely,
he saw many ducks swimming in the pond,
he thought: “Will they want me as a companion?”
He approached naively to those birds,
went close to him and then passed on to greetings,
with good manners, reverent,
he greeted everyone cordially.
He said, “Hello gentle ladies, courteous ducks,
I introduce myself…”. But rude and rude
they interrupted him on the fly, laughing and shouting:
«You would be what, are you joking ?!
Much more than a bird you look like a thing …
Duckling you, clumsy and almost monstrous? ».
And then they laughed in chorus, more and more out loud,
unhooking himself so much that his jaws dislocated.
Ugly Duckling after this angheria
with tears in his eyes he ran away
and flying with his a little strange way
he came to another pond not far away.
There he saw a beautiful crowd of swans,
graceful, elegant, took flight,
dancing gracefully on the enchanted lake
and Ugly Duckling was delighted.
“I wish I was as beautiful as the swans I adore,
what I wouldn’t do to look like them! ‘
So he fantasized with the dreaming mind,
imagining a beautiful dancing swan.
He fantasized with half-closed eyes,
after having suffered too many, many abuses,
and between dreams and sighs, driven by the mind,
he was already swimming with the swans, perhaps more by instinct.
Not a comment or a rumor,
no one gave any contempt,
the swans did not think to avoid it,
but they ran to embrace him,
and flapping their wings in greeting
they welcomed him cheerfully.
Duckling was very surprised
no one chased him away or offended him:
“You embrace me and you don’t know me,
do not throw me out and do not mock me,
do not make fun of me and above all
do not tell me Duckling you are ugly ».
“You are not ugly at all, but you are beautiful,
you are more than a friend, already a brother,
you will be a beautiful white and elegant swan,
you will be a beautiful white swan in an instant. ‘
“I would be what, a swan?” Dumbfounded
Ugly Duckling was amazed,
but all the swans shaking their heads
they were happy together to party.
“You’ll soon be that swan you don’t know
wait one more day and then you will see ».
And the long awaited day then came,
Duckling suddenly woke up
and reflecting in the water of the pond
he saw himself renewed in appearance.
Her feathers were white like milk,
soft like cream, like egg white,
elegant wings, graceful bearing,
beautiful as a beautiful swan, overjoyed.
Like a jewel kept in a casket,
Ugly Duckling has become a swan!
He was the most beautiful in the whole pond,
she really was a beauty in the bathroom.
Ugly Duckling from that day there
he felt the joy, the happiness,
and together with all the swans, new friends,
they lived there very white and happy.
Ugly Duckling was no longer alone
and together with the other swans took flight.
