The president of ENIT (National Tourism Agency), Giorgio Palmucci, told us how, with great probability, the scenario of tourism will be in the coming months and gave us some suggestions on how to start thinking about travel in a responsible and conscious way.
The difficult situation caused by the COVID-19 has changed the habits of the Italians. How they will be family trips in the next months? Will it be necessary to travel respecting numerous precautions? Will some travel modes be preferred over others? There are, of course, no official government provisions yet, but we wanted to draw a likely scenario asking the most authoritative body in the Italian tourism field, namely ENIT.
We interviewed the president of ENIT (National Tourism Agency), Giorgio Palmucci, to ask him how he expects Italian families to travel in the coming months and what precautions they will have to follow, and to have a general orientation on which type of tourism will be the most suitable for the situation and following these months so difficult for Italy and for the world.
Summer 2020 and families: what are the tips for this summer’s holidays? The executive director of ENIT (National Tourism Agency), Giovanni Bastianelli, replies.
How does ENIT expect tourism to evolve in, to and from Italy in the coming months?
«Tourist Italy is still in the dreams of Italians and foreigners with thermal, seaside and climatic destinations, cities of art, luxury destinations with fashion and design as well as shopping and centers equipped to host international meetings.
The first signs of recovery will come from the domestic market starting from the regional one. The proximity tourism and the facilitated connections with the motorway sections will also allow the resumption of arrivals from abroad and therefore from the destinations closest to Italy which make it reachable also by car.
The contingency offers an opportunity for all operators in the sector to raise quality standards and operate that renewal and adaptation that the sector requires with the advancement of innovation and environmental policies. We are confident that tourism will restart with more determination and will be a challenge to renewal with new energy on the markets.
The Italian lifestyle will come back stronger than before. Italy, despite the restrictions imposed by contingencies, is not frightening and is still in the wishes of foreigners. Foreigners are trying to book flights for this summer even though they are not yet sure they can reach their destination. Teamwork with all the institutions and stakeholders in the field will be needed to reactivate a tourism supply chain that has seen Italy in the lead among the most visited countries in the world.
Enit is already preparing international promotion campaigns that we will model on the security provisions that the Government will adopt. The National Tourism Agency has activated the dashboard with constant reports every 15 days to monitor the preferences of travelers in Italy and their future wishes ».
How would it be better to travel, if you can make a guess?
“IS the moment of the walks, of the rediscovery of naturalistic and open-air paths that require small groups. It will also be the time for the most exclusive experiences to be made accessible to all with the appropriate precautions.
It has always been a battle supported by ENIT and also contemplated in the Agency’s three-year plan that of distribute the flows over different periods of the year and develop the promotion of lesser-known locations. We must also be ready to make our great cities of art live in a different way, which have always provided the highest number of tourists, especially foreigners ».
Will it be necessary to follow some precautions in addition to those already known?
«Travel planning in all its details and reservations can be useful preventive tools. The figure of the travel designer, for example, becomes more important than ever. The support and involvement of all Italian citizens-travelers will be fundamental, as they can tell what is beautiful in lesser-known areas, a storytelling that extends to everyone ».
Will there be greater attention to the environment and the planet?
«We must focus precisely on the details of the Peninsula, the virgin places, the suburban areas of the main cities so that even the suburbs can experience a phase of development. It is an opportunity to address the issue of sustainability and spread a new way of proposing and experiencing tourism: greener and slower.
But also to guarantee more personalized experiences, tailored to the individual tourist. Many realities that had to deal with flows of overtourism, such as Venice, are already ready to face controlled access as was the case with ad hoc apps, for example. A contained tourism able to calmly enhance and appreciate the beauties of the beautiful country. The movements will depend on the constraints imposed by the government ».
Will the current concept we have of traveling change?
“The search for a tailor-made travel experience is one of the trends that is emerging in the light of current contingencies and with the advance …
