Lombardy is a region that offers many surprises. We must not stop only in the city of Milan, known for fashion, work and the historical beauties of the city. In this region there are also beautiful lakes, to be seen at least once in a lifetime:
- Lake Como
- Lake of Iseo
- Lake Garda
- Lake Maggiore
- Lugano lake
- Idro lake
- Varese Lake
- Mantua lake
- Lake of Sartirana
- Lake of Olgiate
Today we will go to discover one of the beauties of Lake Iseo, Lovere, the perfect destination for a romantic getaway or for a family outing.
Starting from Milan, in about 90 minutes by car, you arrive in Lovere, on the north coast of Lake Iseo, the last province of Bergamo, before starting the Brescia area. And since 2003 it has even been counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Along the A4 motorway you can exit at Palazzolo, Ospitaletto or Bergamo and go up one side or the other of the lake to reach the highest point.
Here was born the first Celtic settlement of Lovere, which increased in the Middle Ages and in fact you can still see the Söca tower, the Alghisi tower and the round Torricella. Outside the old walls, over the centuries the Renaissance village was born, where the most important monument of the city is located, the basilica of Santa Maria in Valvendra. Among its medieval alleys, colorful palaces and Lake Iseo, Lovere is the perfect destination for a boat trip, a walk in the alleys in search of history and some fresh mountain air.
Leaving the car a short distance from the center, the first attraction is certainly the lakefront, characterized by a relaxing, elegant and very welcoming atmosphere. Walking for a few minutes you reach the small historic center with the classic square with a fountain overlooking the lake. Here you will find many cafes for a break after the trip. The lakefront is a path of about 2 kilometers that winds with pavements and walkways suspended over the water. Along the way there are also benches where you can stop and admire the view. On Saturday morning, right on the lakefront, the market takes place: a typical market with many stalls with local products and much more. Walking for another 500 meters along the lake, you will arrive at a small playground in the green, always overlooking the lake.
The Imbarcadero is also located in Piazza XIII Martiri, the main square of Lovere. Here you can organize a boat trip to explore other locations on the lake.
Gallery of the Tadini Academy of Fine Arts
It is the oldest Lombard museum of the nineteenth century. Heart of the collection are the works of Religion and the Tadini Stele by Antonio Canova. Count Luigi Tadini (1745-1829) decided to create a foundation with schools of music and drawing, which are still active, and had a palace built by the lake to exhibit his art collections to the public, formed between the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The Soca Tower
The Soca Tower is located in the heart of Lovere, in the center of the medieval expansion area. It is a massive construction, now consisting of three floors, built in the second half of the fourteenth century. Today it is a widespread hotel
Torre delle Beccarie
Nothing remains of the Torre delle Beccarie. There is only one particular passage between the houses that leads to the Church of San Giorgio with a long staircase.
The Civic Tower and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele
This square represented the center of medieval Lovere and was the seat of the judiciary and the municipality. In the square there was the pillory and sentences were carried out, including capital sentences. Here it is possible to climb for free on the Civic Tower, about 28 meters high, and thus admire Lovere from above in all its beauty.
Tower of the Alghisi
Continuing further beyond the square you reach the Torre degli Alghisi: a 12th century tower house belonging to the Alghisi family, part of the Ghibelline family.
The Civic Museum of Natural Sciences
The Natural Science Museum is located on the lakefront, near Piazzale Marconi. Inside there is a small collection of birds, mammals, minerals
The Tourist Port
The port is one of the largest and most modern port facilities on European lakes and is capable of accommodating hundreds of boats. It was inaugurated in 2002 and in a few years it has become a reference point for the whole province. Here you can practice various sports such as sailing, swimming and rowing.
A boat trip is a truly unique way to discover Lake Iseo. In fact, from the boat you can admire the landscape comfortably seated and get off at the ports of the towns chosen as stops for walks. The price of the ticket changes according to the number of zones crossed by the route chosen to reach the destination. Dedicate at least one stop to Montisola. This place away from the city noise is worth seeing, on foot, by bicycle or with the small buses that make line service.
Many many many years ago, in front of Lovere, there lived a big good dragon named Iseo. This animal ate only dreams and stars. He slept a lot but snored a lot! So the inhabitants of Lovere decided to ask the elves of the mountains for help. After calling them, they asked them not to let the dragon sleep anymore. They agreed, but in return they wanted their boss to marry the most beautiful girl in the country. But she was in love with another boy and did not want to marry the leader of the elves. So he cried and did not give peace. The dragon was also tired because he could no longer sleep. So one day, a seagull decided to help both of them. (no one knows how!) The girl managed to marry the young man she was in love with and the dragon went back to sleep, but she decided to go to the mountains so as not to disturb the people anymore. To be forgiven for the continuous snoring, he decided to form a lake in the pit he had created with his weight, went to look for water and took it to Lovere. This is how Lake Iseo was formed!
