The splendid Elba island it has an uncontaminated and fascinating natural environment and, above all for this reason, it is an ideal destination for summer holidays with the family.
On the island it is possible to visit the mines, venture out on a sailing boat in search of whales, explore the sand dunes, go trekking on donkey back or, again, stroll in the woods to discover fairy tales. We have collected the activities to do and the beaches to visit absolutely.
Here, according to the tourism board of the island of Elba, a series of activities to do with the family on the island:
- Take a descent into the mines.
The Ginevro magnetite mine is the largest deposit in Europe and is considered a strategic iron reserve by the Italian state. Equipped with a helmet and a spirit of adventure, thanks to the help of the guides, you can go down “into the belly of the island” by immersing yourself in an experiential visit, to discover how the miners lived.
- Discover the island in the company of donkeys.
You can go trekking in a different way than usual, that is, walking in the company of donkeys, the only ancient support of Elban peasants. Through the contact with these docile and meek animals, you can get to know the Elban territory both from a naturalistic point of view and by deepening its history in a journey back in time. A visit to the Peasant Civilization Museum is also recommended.
- Go whale watching on a sailing boat.
It is, in fact, possible to observe cetaceans in their natural environment. There are eight species of cetaceans that populate the marine area of the Tuscan Archipelago and thanks to the presence on board of the sailing instructor, you can learn the best practices to follow during navigation in order not to disturb the animals. In case of missed sighting, stops will be made to practice snorkeling.
- Explore the dunes of Lacona.
In Italy, on Elba, on the southern side of the island, there is the only surviving example of a natural habitat of sandy coast in the entire Tuscan Archipelago. The dunes are all to be explored to protect the extraordinary heritage of biodiversity. The CEA (Lacona Environmental Education Center) is an integral part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and offers a varied calendar of visits.
- Visit the Marina di Campo aquarium.
The Elba Aquarium is considered unique for the variety of Mediterranean species it hosts and offers the opportunity to observe the incredible biodiversity of the waters of the Island of Elba and the Archipelago. Coastal, pelagic or deeper water inhabitants; crustaceans, from lobsters to the most curious species of crabs, shrimps and hermit crabs. And then again molluscs, starfish and sea urchins, gorgonians and sea squirts. And the great Charlie Turtle, testimonial of the environmental protection activity that since 1993 the Aquarium has been carrying out in defense of protected species. The visit is completed by the tropical pools of Sharks and Piranhas and a small Fauna Museum dedicated to the terrestrial fauna of the island.
- Getting to know the Elba sheep.
You can visit “Rural Gifts”, a sustainable dairy farm and educational farm founded in 2013, when Tipa, Zizza, Tranqui, Vittoria, Cispi, Grilla and Macchio, seven Comisana sheep – a native breed of Sicily – landed at Elba island. Here the sheep met Sara, a young graduate in Agriculture from Naples, who has set up a real educational farm and the seven sheep have become thirty-two. Since then, every day, the company has worked to make tourists, families and children aware of the potential of the sheep with workshops and with the products obtained from them.
- Venture into the woods to discover fairy tales.
You can go into the enchanted forest of San Martino, accompanied by elf guides, for a nice walk with animated readings for children. The activity is suitable for children aged 5 to 10 and is part of the extensive program of initiatives promoted by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
- Discovering the Volterraio fortress.
The fortress of Volterraio, 395 meters high and set in the rock, dominates the island. The exploration of its interior is a fascinating adventure even for the little ones and the external panorama is no exception.
But which are the most beautiful and “family oriented” places – in particular the beaches – to visit with the family? Here are the indications of the tourism board.
- Ghiaie beach in Portoferraio.
This beach is located a few meters from the center: in it there is a shady park and there are restaurants, bars, hotels, shops, pharmacies and games for children.
- Marina di Campo beach.
Also this beach, being right in the village, has the same characteristics as that of Ghiaie: there are special services for children, etc. In addition, it is the largest beach on Elba.
- Lacona and Lido di Capoliveri they are not very close to the historical centers, but they are always equipped with all comforts. In Lacona there is a park where workshops for children are organized and there is a pine forest, much appreciated by families and very popular for classic beach games.
- Biodola beach and Procchio beach they are splendid places, probably with a little more charm and refinement and with important structures close to the beach.
- Straccoligno in Capoliveri and Rio Marina they are perfect if you are looking for less crowded and more characteristic places.
- In Rio Marinafinally, in addition to going to the play area in the center, it is possible to take an excursion to the mine with the little train.
