In the post-Covid-19 summer that awaits us, many families will decide to do not go on vacation. How to explain to children that you don’t go on vacation
WHAT IS STAYCATION.
The neologism that comes from the Anglo-Saxon world is “staycation“: to be on vacation without the luggage stress and travel and without spending a fortune. For those who just want to relax by taking a break from the office and spending time with the family, holidays at home are ideal.
HOLIDAY, AN ADULT NEED.
As often happens, the parental mistake is that of project their anxieties onto the child. «The skill on the part of us adults – explains the expert – will be that of not making the choice weigh on the child. The need for a holiday belongs to us adults, not the children, as well as our frustration of having to give it up: our children, especially up to 6-8 years old, have no expectations about it. All they ask for are the certainties given by the family and friends network, indeed: the journey is often destabilizing for them, so much so that in unknown places they could manifest small regressions such as bedwetting or the constant need for mom and dad sometimes even up to to 12-13 years old “.
HOW ARE YOU AND NOT WHERE YOU GO.
In short, if we do not leave this year, you will suffer a little, the child not at all. «Provided, however, that you know how to transmit serenity and enthusiasm: if the child sees you downcast, he will deduce that not going on vacation is a bad thing even if from his point of view there is no reason.
“This is a special year, but we will live it in the most cheerful and carefree way possible and we will do many things together”: it is all that the child needs to hear. He only cares about how you are and not where you are going“.
With a positive attitude on your part, rest assured that your proposals will be more welcome than you imagine. Indeed, your child’s energy and enthusiasm will certainly be able to carry you too!

5 tips to better enjoy your holiday at home
No housework and smartphones. Since you do not “change the air”, it is essential to stay away from the usual habits and technology: smartphones and household chores are sources of stress, therefore it is forbidden to check emails or recover back commissions. Clean the house before starting the holiday and then forget about it: this is the time to spend having fun with your children.
Change your daily habits. Don’t let the clock tick the holidays: allow you and your children to wake up later, have a hearty breakfast to prepare together or directly at the bar that makes those delicious croissants. You can spend a whole day doing a giant puzzle or cooking a 5-star dinner, forgetting, for once, the passing of time. You can also try an ethnic restaurant, or just eat take-out on the day you don’t feel like cooking.
No to total idleness. Slowing down the pace and disconnecting the plug does not mean staying on the sofa all day: “Younger children – says Bruzzone – just need to know that mum and dad are always there for him, but also with older children. available during the year is always sacrificed: therefore take these special holidays as an opportunity to be together with your child at different rhythms. But propose activities and stimuli, organize the days ».
Tourists in their own home. A vacation at home is an excellent opportunity to discover the parks, monuments, museums of your city or those nearby that you have never had time to admire. To get away a little further, take a day or two trip out of town, perhaps to the sea, the lake or the nearest mountain. Or – why not? – to that amusement park you’ve never been to.
Take some time for yourself. Parents, do not forget about yourself: you too are entitled to some rest. A massage, a trip out of town, an afternoon alone either individually or as a couple. Get help from grandparents, a babysitter or take turns on “dad’s day” and “mom’s day”.
Ideas for making holidays at home fun for children
There are many special things that can also be done while staying at home: «For children, even a tent in the garden or a simple trip to the center is a discovery. It takes little to make this unusual condition for us live – even if it will be widespread this year – as an extraordinary and curious event ».
Prepare them for the holiday. Mark the starting date on the calendar and maybe invent some holiday kits for your children, with some small gifts that underline that you have entered a special time of the year. Add to your shopping some food that you don’t usually buy: candies, sweets, drinks. All whims that you would not normally indulge in… but you are on vacation. «But be careful not to overdo it: not everything should be granted just because you are not taking it away. Indulge some of his wishes, but the holiday is yours too and you will take turns choosing what to do and where to go ».
0-3 years. For the age group from 0 to 3 you can prepare games with water or simulate a small beach at home: “Put a small pool on the terrace and, to make him play with the decanting, provide him with yellow flour, bottles of plastic, funnels, bucket and shovel ».
3-6 and 6-12. At school age you can do many jobs together: «Build a kite together to fly when you go out, or a tent in the garden, but also in your bedroom or living room because it can become a permanent place in the house during this holiday. Think of themed days, with a game or a story at the beginning of the day and then decide together with your child how to dress up and what to eat: it can be the Indians, the detective, or Harry Potter. A game that you really like is also a treasure hunt: leave traces that perhaps, with a little imagination, become the fang of a monster or a magical amulet. Even a night excursion with torches will be an adventure for your child, even if behind the house ». Do not leave them spoiled for choice on the activity to do: «For a child to choose is difficult, the question” What do you want to do today? ” puts them in crisis: rather make some proposals already thought out and involve them ».
Pre-adolescents and teenagers. This is the age group that perhaps could suffer a little from the absence of a trip, since the comparison with the friend network is already present. “However, it is possible to stimulate them on a more cognitive level: make them curious by visiting a museum, make them look for information on the monument you will visit on …
