Once, when there were no smartphones and computers, children met in homes or outdoors and played with each other for hours. Who hasn’t happened to hear grandparents’ stories about games that were played in the past?
We can take advantage of this very special summer, characterized by the so-called “Phase 3”, to offer children suggestions on how to relive some games from the past today.
We asked Andrea Angiolino, journalist and game inventor, who published the book Let’s play together with paper and pencil (Sonda Edizioni), to suggest us a “game of the past” for the little ones.
The activity presented is part of the online SUMMER CAMP of nostrofiglio.it on Monday.
“One game to play outdoors, and in which you can keep your distance as these pandemic times require, is ‘Follow the Leader’. You can also see it done in Walt Disney’s Peter Pan film, ”explained Andrea Angiolino.
How many are played
“You play in four or more, even in many”.
How to play
“We get in single file and the first starts doing what he wants: he jumps, runs, spreads his arms, climbs over an obstacle, walks on a log. The others follow him doing the exact same things. The boss will make extravagant gestures and actions, to put others in trouble. Whoever makes a mistake is eliminated.
The last one who remains in the game becomes the boss and we start over. Eskimo children do it in the snow: each one has to put his feet in the footsteps of those who preceded him, who deliberately puts his feet in the strangest positions », concludes Angiolino.
Andrea Angiolino, the author
“I started writing about games in game magazines in 1982, when I was still in high school. Since then I have published many board games: the most famous is Wings of War, today Wings of Glory (Ares Games), which has been translated into a dozen languages and re-proposes the air duels of the first and second world wars with very accurate models . Its sci-fi variant is Battlestar Galactica – Starship Battles, ed. Tesla Games.
For children there is Safari Golo (Oliphante 2), a photographic hunt for animals.
Among my books on the game there is Let’s play together with paper and pencil (Sonda), which has also been lucky abroad, Just nothing to play (Gallucci), which teaches games without specific materials and Game stories (Gallucci) which tells curiosity and background on how the most famous games were born. Then there is the Dictionary of Games (Zanichelli). I teach game design courses, write articles on games and comics for the Treccani works, tell stories of games and toys at Wikiradio (Rai Radio Tre) ».
