A cycling holiday suitable for children
Organize one cycling holiday it is a unique opportunity to be together as a family in an original, fun and healthy way. Here’s how to do it: the advice of the president of Fiab – Italian Federation of Friends of the Bicycle, Giulietta Pagliaccio.

The advantages of a cycling holiday
But why choose a cycle holiday? “Because it’s funny and it is a holiday the moment you get on the bike. And then it’s a journey active and babies are in great need of discharge and move, because they have very sedentary lives. Traveling by bike is therefore also a way to teach him a different and healthier lifestyle “.
“If they are big enough, one way to plan the ideal trip is to involve the little ones right away: from choosing the destination to choosing the hotel to stay in”.
What route to do: the itinerary
The age of the children
Then there are some parameters that, depending on the age and preparation of the children, it is good to evaluate. “If they are very young, for example, it is better not to travel too many kilometers every day, because they can get tired. And then it is better to choose routes that include stops where to stop to play. An excellent option is to walk along the sea, a river or lake: in this case, you can swim during the breaks “.
The level of training
Obviously, when choosing the route, your level of training must also be considered. “For beginners, it is better to take a simple route, on the flat, for a distance of 20-25 km per day. If, on the other hand, you are already accustomed to pedaling, you can also plan a more demanding itinerary up to 60 -80 km per day “. Always if you are not an expert, it is good to foresee ways out: “Think of itineraries that run along the railway, so as to take a train to go back or go to the next stage, if you are too tired”.
Departure in groups with other families
Another precaution is to travel with other families with children. “In this type of holiday, in order for everyone to be happy, it is good to adapt to the needs of the little ones. In this sense, it is good to organize yourself with other couples with children, so that moments of leisure are created among peers”.
Which bike to choose
Don’t think you have to spend millions to choose the most suitable vehicle to accompany you on this journey. “The bike must be comfortable and easy and must allow you to tackle even difficult situations: if you plan to do many kilometers every day and maybe there is even a little difference in altitude, it is better to opt for a bike with gears. A common city bike is also fine. If, on the other hand, the itinerary is sweeter, you can also opt for a classic Dutch one ”.
Also based on the age of the child, you can choose how to take it on the road. “If it is very small, I recommend the trolley, which is very comfortable and gives the child the opportunity to be distracted. He is in fact seated, with his seat belt, and next to him you can leave his games, a book and music. In addition, it is covered and protected if the weather is bad ”.
An alternative can be the seat, to be mounted in front or behind, depending on the age of the child. “You have to choose the approved ones, which are safer. It must be borne in mind, however, that with the child seat the bike becomes heavier and therefore if you plan also many transshipments on trains or other means of transport, this could tire you. If you choose the seat, however, you must equip your child with a helmet, to protect his head in the event of a fall ”.
“When, on the other hand, the children are older, you can use the camel, which is a small bicycle that attaches to that of adults and the child has the sensation of pedaling, but in reality his father or mother rides. It has the advantage that it can then be detached and, in some places, the little one can even pedal alone ”.
“On some holidays I also saw parents and children in tandem. In this case, there is the advantage that we can pedal together, but the disadvantage that the bike cannot be detached ”.
