How childbirth takes place
Childbirth occurs around the 40th week of pregnancy in different ways which include:
- Spontaneous, natural and vaginal birth
- Caesarean section
- Vaginal delivery after a cesarean (VBAC)
- Childbirth in the water
- I’m leaving at home
Types of birth ps (spontaneous birth)
The natural birth – spontaneous and vaginal – does not provide for the use of drugs, induction or invasive assistance by the staff who assist the woman. The woman waits for the contractions to arrive and lives 4 stages of labor consciously and independently, choosing the most comfortable position, and without the use of drugs. The benefits of natural childbirth include:
- Babies born with a vaginal birth tend to have fewer breathing problems.
- postpartum recovery is shorter and there are no risks of caesarean delivery
- vaginal delivery has a lower infection rate and a shorter hospital stay.
The disadvantages of a vaginal birth can include it tear of the perineum and an eventual episiotomy.
Types of eutocic childbirth
We have hardly heard of eutocic childbirth. It is a rather technical term that defines a type of Natural childbirth: in the case of eutocic birth, the baby comes out of the vaginal canal without the use of tools – such as a suction cup or forceps – and without inducing labor. It is therefore an extremely natural birth without external help.
In dystocia childbirth, instead, useful tools can be used to aid the baby’s exit and labor can be induced.
Cesarean delivery is a real surgery that involves the use of anesthesia spinal (or subarachnoid) or a ‘epidural anesthesia (or epidural) which does not put the mother to sleep, but numbs only the lower part of the body. The woman remains alert and can welcome her baby. An incision is made at the pubic level to let the baby out. All this takes about 40 minutes.
The post delivery of the caesarean section it is longer and more complex: it is a surgery, so you will have to stay in the hospital for a couple of days at least, canalize, you will have the infusions and the stitches will hurt for a while.
Caesarean delivery can be of two types:
- Caesarean by election: this is the scheduled cesarean. Together with your gynecologist you establish a date, which must be set no earlier than 38 weeks, and you go to the hospital or clinic on the day of the operation. It is a decision that must not be taken lightly and must be reserved for a few, selected cases in which spontaneous birth is not recommended;
- emergency cesarean: if labor has already begun or the health of the mother and baby are at risk, a caesarean section can be urgently performed.

I’m leaving at home
Women who prefer home births often take a preparation class to learn what to expect and how to be prepared. During the course we learn what are the stages of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, what happens after childbirth. Generally a midwife assists the woman during home birth which can also take place inside one tub (birth in water).
Home birth can only be considered for physiological and low-risk pregnancies.
VBAC – Natural childbirth after a cesarean
There is no reason why you should give up the idea of having a natural birth after having a first cesarean. It is called, technically, VBAC, and it is the natural birth after the caesarean section.
According to the guidelines on caesarean section of the Higher Institute of Health are very clear, in the absence of specific contraindications, the possibility of a VBAC must be offered to all women.
It is an attempt: according to estimates, 60-80% of women who have already had a caesarean give birth successfully in a natural way. However, a trial labor must be done to undermine the situation.
Childbirth in the water
A water birth means that the mother goes through some or all stages of labor in a tub similar to a whirlpool tub. The baby can be delivered underwater or the mother can come out of the water and give birth in a different position. Water helps to relax, acts as a natural pain reliever and makes natural childbirth less …
