Magnesium is one of the minerals that you have to take in with food. An acute magnesium deficiency leads to painful leg cramps. These are substances that control the metabolism, including the storage of calcium in the bones and the supply of nutrients to the nerves.
This multitude of functions shows why magnesium is so important to pregnant women and the elderly. Magnesium deficiency is common. In addition to muscle cramps, signs of a magnesium deficiency are also insomnia, heart problems and headaches.
If you suffer from these symptoms or are pregnant, your doctor will often prescribe you a magnesium supplement. One of the most common side effects is diarrhea or loose stools. Warning signs of a dangerous overdose of magnesium

These are the signs that magnesium levels are too high:

With a healthy diet, you can avoid a lack of minerals. Whole grains, milk, cheese and yogurt, legumes, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and nuts are good sources of magnesium – without the risk of an overdose.
