Is it possible to get pregnant during menstruation? Let’s try to answer the eternal question of whether it is possible to get pregnant with your period
Getting pregnant during menstruation
It’s possible to get pregnant during menstruation? It is one of the most frequent doubts that concern women who want to avoid pregnancy or are looking for it. It is believed that it is difficult to get pregnant when you are on your period, but is this really the case?
Pregnancy with a menstrual cycle
In theory, one is not possible pregnancy during the menstrual cycle, but it is necessary to make some considerations on the menstrual cycle in order to answer one of the most frequent doubts of many women. In a classic 28-day cycle we will have the first days of the cycle, then ovulation around the 14th day, and then menstruate again after 28 days from the beginning of the previous one.
In this cycle, the period fecondo is between the 13th and 14th day. Since the average sperm life is 3 days, fertile days could be considered those between 10th and 14th day. On the other days (for safety from 1st to 9th and from 17th to 28th) there would be no danger. But let’s use the conditional because this is not a terrain of certainty!
The reality is very different from the theory and, in fact, many human beings were born following this contraceptive method, later called, by Ogino Knaus.
The problem is not in the theory that it is true and it works correctly !!!
The real problem lies in the variability of human behavior, even from a physiological point of view. Menstrual cycles they are never all the same, they can be longer or shorter. Hence the first risk because the day of ovulation also moves. Not to mention that in some cycles there may also be more ovulations.
Let’s consider a cycle anticipated, i.e. 20 days long. In this case, ovulation is anticipated and coincides with the moment in which the flow of the menstrual cycle is also present. Furthermore, since the spermatozoa live for 3 days, already from the second day of the cycle you may be pregnant and have your period. This happens because when the cycle is anticipated, the whole ovulation, with its subsequent 14 days, moves forward and it is not that we should consider an average.
Even in the case of a delay we are witnessing the same shift, but postponed. Example of a 32-day cycle: in this case the possibility of pregnancy shifts between the 14th and 18th day of the menstrual cycle because ovulation and its subsequent 14-day period move later in time.
Pregnancy with regular menstruation
So if your periods are regular and arrive on time after 14 days on average from ovulation, you are unlikely to be pregnant. But doubts may arise if:
the losses are present about a week to 10 days after ovulation. In this case it is not about menstruation but about spotting from pregnancy in progress.
Losses are scarce and the basal temperature continues to remain high. In these cases the pregnancy test can remove any doubts. And if the test is negative and more than 14 days have passed since ovulation, you are not waiting.

So during menstruation and immediately after you are not fertile, but this is not always the case. In women with a shorter cycle, ovulation could take place even five days after your period and since sperm can survive in the tubes for up to five days, this explains why you can get pregnant during menstruation and also immediately after the period.
You can get pregnant before your period
We have seen that cycle length and ovulation can vary a lot from woman to woman or from month to month. So in case of irregular cycle there may be ovulation even a few days before your period. It is therefore possible to get pregnant even 2/3 days before menstruation.
