Genital or vaginal dryness is a very common problem at all ages. 70% of women have experienced this feeling at least once in their life: a guide to the causes and remedies
Scientifically we are talking about genital dryness, a very widespread problem that does not allow you to live your sexual life peacefully. The causes? The age. But also tight pants, inadequate nutrition and detergents. Let’s see in more detail: about 70 percent of women have had this feeling in their lifetime, at least for some periods. Sometimes dryness is associated with specific symptoms, such as burning, itching and irritation and can occur during sexual intercourse.
These disturbances they tend to increase with age. In fact, they depend on the negative effect that aging and menopause have on vaginal and vulvar ecosystems, on the state of nutrition of the tissues and on their ability to defend themselves from infectious agents, and from physical and chemical trauma (including detergents that are too aggressive or in any case inappropriate for the delicate genital mucous membranes). In fact, very complex ecosystems inhabit both our skin, even genital and therefore vulvar, and the vagina.
An ecosystem is the set of living beings, physico-chemical conditions and the environment which, in a delimited space, are inseparably linked to each other, with continuous and reciprocal interactions. In the body there is an ecosystem that concerns the skin (cutaneous), and the skin system includes other subspecies of ecosystems such as the vulvar ecosystem, which includes female external genitalia. Others concern the mucous membranes, for example of the mouth (buccal) or vagina (vaginal).
Causes of genital dryness
This symptom has very different causes – and treatments – depending on whether it affects it vulva, i.e. the female external genitalia, or the vagina, which is part of the woman’s internal genitalia. There are some factors that can significantly worsen the situation:
contemporary lifestyles (tight pants, excessive cleansing, inadequate nutrition …)
This ailment has two causes main:
- biological, linked to the aging of the genitals due to age and the onset of menopause and to the reduction of estrogen and testosterone hormones
- lifestyles: the use of aggressive soaps, several times a day, deprives the skin and mucous membranes of the vulva of the microscopic but very important layer that covers them and maintains optimal hydration. Too frequent hygiene and / or with products that do not respect the delicacy and PH causes a progressive feeling of dryness. It also deprives the vulvar skin of the living “barrier” that protects it from external aggressions, increasing its vulnerability to inflammation, allergies and infections.
Causes of vaginal dryness
There dryness which affects the sexual organ to his indoor in turn has two main causes:
- biological: as mentioned above, the first factor of normal vagina hydration is the estrogen hormones; when these fail at various stages of life (puerperium, breastfeeding) with suspended menstruation and in menopause) the woman may experience an unpleasant feeling of dryness. Estrogen also facilitates the normal response to sexual stimulation the blood vessels surrounding the vagina;
- psychosexuals: Vaginal dryness can also be caused by inadequate sexual arousal, for psychic causes that do not excite, relational or couple problems.
Furthermore, vulvovaginal dryness can cause pain during penetration (“dyspareunia”) and lead to a rejection of sex.
Remedies for genital dryness
Allowing the genital tissues to breathe, using clothing made of natural materials (cotton, silk or linen), and avoiding “barrier” clothing (panty liners, briefs, body, tights and trousers) which prevents the transpiration of the fabrics;
for intimate protection, during menstruation, internal tampons (during the day) can be alternated with external absorbents, preferably in pure cotton, at night;
for intimate hygiene, prefer acid pH detergents, based on thyme or sage of demonstrated selective antibacterial activity, which respects the vulvar ecosystem;
the soap must be diluted in water. Use the soap about twice a day;
apply daily on the vulva one vitamin E cream with trophic and soothing effect.
It’s important try to understand the cause of genital dryness. In fact, in cases of lack or insufficiency of foreplay or irritations vagina caused by the use of tampons, or insufficient lubrication linked to the use of drugs or drugs, the remedy can be easily identified.
The stress then, it is the second reason that causes dryness and can normally last for a few months.
In the case of vaginal dryness due to disorders related to menopause the remedy is to take the hormone replacement therapy, which can also be beneficial by protecting against osteoporosis, coronary disease, hypercholesterolemia.
In case of post-partum hormonal changes that can cause this type of disorder, the phenomenon is usually temporary (a few weeks).
Intimate moisturizing products
In all cases, the use of a lubricant, at least for a certain time, is recommended.
Women generally dislike buying actual lubricants out of prejudice or shame and often use alternative home methods (baby oils, petroleum jelly, or saliva) that they are not effective and indeed they can cause problems.
The vaginal lubricants you can choose from water-based or cream. The first has the appearance of a transparent gel, sometimes odorless, others with a pleasant odor, non-greasy and often contains natural substances that have an emollient and calming effect such as Chamomile, Mallow and Calendula, to prevent irritation and burning in the skin. intimate areas.
The creamy one is similar but has a prolonged efficacy over time, it is inadvisable though if you are using a condom. Only water-soluble lubricating gels are compatible with condoms. It is therefore necessary to choose products that bear the words “water-soluble”, “water-soluble” or “water-based gel”
