Free Nipt Test in Bologna
Free Nipt Test for all women since January, in the province of Bologna. A pilot phase has started which, after nine months, should be extended to the whole Emilia Romagna region. Until now, this fetal DNA test could only be performed privately at a cost of around 700 euros.
What is the Nipt Test?
It is a non-invasive screening prenatal test. It is performed through a simple blood sample from the woman and allows to evaluate the risk of Down Syndrome (trisomy 21), and trisomies 13 and 18 in the fetus carrying the womb. The test is in fact based on the analysis of the fetal DNA present in the maternal plasma.
The goal is to reduce the use of amniocentesis and CVS, which provide a percentage of the risk of abortion that worries pregnant women.
Who will it be free for?
An official note states that the test will be free for all pregnant women “regardless of the age and the presence of risk factors of the mother, and will be combined with the combined test, through a single blood sample”.
How to join?
As we read in Repubblica, anyone wishing to undergo the Nipt test must participate in the information meetings organized in the Family Counseling Centers and Birth Points in the province of Bologna. During the meetings you can express your consent to participate in the test and book the screening. The venues and times of the meetings have been published on the website of the Local Health Authority of Bologna, the Policlinico S. Orsola and the Local Health Authority of Imola. Starting from January 15th, for all general information on the Nipt it was reported to contact the telephone number 051-6862530, from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 13.00.
When is it possible to carry out the Nipt Test?
The Nipt Test must be booked within the 11th week of the last menstruation. The results of the NIPT will be delivered by the gynecologist who performs the nuchal translucency required by the combined test (approximately 1-2 weeks after collection) during the same visit.
