Cycle delay, causes and possible explanations, from stress to hormones to the much desired pregnancy
Cycle delay, causes
The menstrual cycle occurs, on average, every 28 days. Ovulation occurs around the 14th day, and if the egg is not fertilized on the fertile days it is expelled along with the excess endometrial tissue, with the Menses. But it can happen that anomalies in the cycle and unexplained delays occur. So let’s try to understand what the causes of period delay.
Cycle delay and negative test
If you have a sex life and don’t use contraceptive methods, the first thought is that you are expecting a baby. A doubt to be resolved quickly, both if you want to get pregnant and if it is an unwanted pregnancy.
If the test is negative then it is good to calculate the days that have passed since the date of the last menstruation, perhaps there was a calculation error. If there is any doubt that you have made a mistake, you can wait for the next cycle to arrive and mark the date on the calendar.
And if, on the other hand, there are no doubts about the dates, then there are many possible explanations.
- You have weight problems, in excess or in defect. Overweight, obesity, but also excessive thinness can alter hormonal balance and create problems with the menstrual cycle, also compromising reproductive capacity. In most women, returning to a normal weight means seeing their periods return and increasing the likelihood of getting pregnant.
- Plus some illnesses, such as thyroid glands, can cause alterations in the menstrual cycle, as can the intake of certain drugs and contraceptives.
- And if you are no longer very young, the disappearance of your period or its alteration could be the first sign of the arrival of menopause.
Cycle delay due to stress
You are under particular pressure and it is stress it compromises the production of a hormone essential for ovulation, stress can also worsen the body’s response to some diseases, even simple ones, such as flu.
Other stress-related factors can also negatively affect your cycle: for example, those who work at night, those who eat too little and put pressure on their body, those who exercise excessively and require excessive performance from the body.
Cycle late and no symptoms
When menstruation does not occur, the first thought runs to a possible pregnancy and the sensations are positive or negative, depending on whether you are looking for a baby or not. What is certain is that generally menstruation is anticipated by some rather specific symptoms that are grouped in the so-called premenstrual syndrome. Let’s see the most common symptoms:
From an emotional point of view:
- sudden changes in mood,
- slight depression and irritability,
- crying fits
from the physical point of view:
- pain and discomfort of various kinds,
- tension in the breasts
- aches and cramps in the lower abdomen,
- increased fluid retention
- lumbar back pain
- gastritis and digestive difficulties
- intestinal disorders.
Not in all women Menses they are preceded by these symptoms and do not always occur all together. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that every woman knows her own body and “feels” when her period is about to arrive. Many of these signs are also linked to early pregnancy and immediate post-conception: breasts are sore and tight, lower abdomen cramps, headaches, irritability and sleepiness occur. In short, in many cases the first symptoms of pregnancy are confused with those of premenstrual syndrome.
But what to do if the cycle does not occur instead e absolutely nothing is heard? The advice is to wait a few days to see if things change, in many cases it is just a delay, perhaps due to a little stress or a momentary alteration of the ovulatory cycle. It is useless to rush to the doctor: better give him a simple phone call if the period does not occur for a week after the expected date and he will tell us what to do himself.
Period delay and white discharge
The white losses they can indicate a wide variety of things, some not pathological but others attributable to an infection. If we are to think positively, whitish discharge is one of the first symptoms of pregnancy.
However, those related to early pregnancy are losses whitish, odorless completely different from those that may indicate, for example, a fungal infection such as candida. In this case the losses have a bad smell, have the texture similar to that of cottage cheese and are associated with itching and discomfort during urination and sexual intercourse.
In the case of vaginitis, however, the losses have a more homogeneous consistency, but have an unpleasant odor.
In the presence of these symptoms it is good to consult the gynecologist who will make a visit and perform an examination to understand the true origin of the losses and maybe in the same place he will also be able to understand, with an ultrasound, why the menstrual cycle has not occurred.
Cycle late how to make it come
When menstruation is slow in coming, but maybe we feel that the symptoms are all there, we can do something to shorten the time. So, how to stimulate the cycle? For example, a nice warm bath can usually relax the muscles, the uterus and even the mind, relieving it of the stress that can cause a delay.
