Calculation of fertility: how to understand which are the most fertile days of the month to increase the chances of getting pregnant
Calculation of fertility
How to calculate the fertile period to get pregnant? Let’s find out all the ways to know which ones are fertile days of the month, to maximize probability of conception.
The calculation of the fertile period it must first be done by keeping your menstrual cycle under control for a few months, in this way we will know how long the cycle lasts, when the menstruation arrives and therefore it will be easier to calculate the fertility period.
In a monthly menstrual cycle which lasts, on average, 28 days the calculation of the fertile period will be made starting from the last day of menstruation and going on for 14 days: the time window of fertility is that of about 4 days, straddling ovulation.
Calculation of the fertile period to get pregnant
L’ovum it is produced by the ovary and travels along the fallopian tubes to the uterus: if it is not fertilized it flakes off and will then be expelled with menstruation. Its life cycle is about 24 hours, during this time it can be fertilized by one sperm during his journey. Sperm can survive up to 72 hours and even more: this means that the window of the fertile period is about 4 days, ie those immediately preceding and immediately following ovulation.
It is therefore possible to calculate i days of ovulation with some foresight using several means:
ovulation sticks: these are available in pharmacies and measure the concentration in the urine of a hormone, LH LH, the luteinizing hormone, which increases when you are about to ovulate. The stripes are colored at the hormone peak in the urine and indicate, therefore, which are the right days to concentrate sexual intercourse aimed at conception;
basal temperature: the temperature rises by about half a degree on the day of ovulation compared to the rest of the month. To use this method it is important to measure your temperature for three months to understand what your basal reference temperature is;
cervical mucus: vaginal mucus changes in consistency, color and quantity in correspondence with the fertile days. It becomes similar to egg white, stringy, more watery, transparent white in color and is much more abundant. The combined observation of the cervical mucus and the basal temperature allows to have a rather precise idea of what the day of ovulation.
Calculation of fertile days after your period
As mentioned, generally, in a cycle of the duration of 28 days ovulation will occur around the middle of the month, so around the 14th day. But a lot depends on the average duration of the cycle: not all women have a cycle that lasts 28 days, some 26 days, others even shorter and the date of ovulation depends on this figure.
Fertile week calculation
We can try to calculate the most fertile days of the month using the so-called method of Ogino-Knaus. In practice, it consists in taking note of the average duration of each menstrual cycle for a few months and then being able to know, with a certain probability, what the most fertile week.
How to calculate the weeks? Let’s say that our monthly cycle, that is the days that pass between one menstruation and the next, lasts 28 days (the average duration of most women of childbearing age) and that menstruation arrived on the 1st of the month: most fertile days they will be those between the 11th and 17th days after the cycle.
This is because, according to this calculation method fertile week of type probabilistic, ovulation will occur around the 14th day, corresponding to an increase in the levels of LH hormones and estrogen. The egg, as we have said, survives for 24 hours but the spermatozoa can remain viable even for 4 days, so for increase the chances of conception we must consider fertile both the days preceding ovulation and the following ones and concentrate sexual intercourse in this week.
Of course, if the cycle lasts less than 28 days or longer, the stone will shift and ovulation will probably occur before the 14th day or later.
Fertile days with an irregular cycle
Of course all the calculations probabilistic ovulation that we can do to get pregnant are likely to not be effective if you have a irregular cycle. It is difficult to establish with a measurement on a calendar which are the fertile days if the cycle length changes continuously. In these cases we can rely on sticks or computers for calculate ovulation, which measure the increase in the levels of the hormones estrogen and LH and therefore are quite reliable, or to the interpretation of the signals that our body sends us when we are ovulating.
