When’s Grandparents’ Day?
The first big question on the subject is: when is Grandparents’ Day? In Brazil, the date is celebrated on 26th of July. That means we’re very close to the date! In 2020, it will be celebrated on a Friday.
In other countries the celebration may be on different dates, such as in the United States, where the celebration takes place on September 13. However, here in Brazil the date was set to July 26 for a very special reason.
Ana Elisa do Couto, a Portuguese woman known as “Dona Aninhas” grandmother of 6 grandchildren. She said that the chosen date was to celebrate the day of Saint Anne e Saint Joachimwho are the parents of Mary the mother of Jesus Christ. Therefore, they are both Jesus’ grandparents.
What is the meaning of Grandparents’ Day?
As the date itself represents, the purpose of Grandparents’ Day is to celebrate the parents of Mary, who are Saint Anne and Saint Joachim. Furthermore, the date is dedicated to all the grandparents as a way of celebrating and honoring these people so important in building a family.
After all, they are responsible for spoiling our children, for giving that childhood air to the children’s lives, for helping their first parents, among other things. So much knowledge and life experience about taking care of a family is very useful for the children and grandchildren, who still enjoy a very loving affective bond.

The importance of the grandparents’ relationship to their grandchildren
The famous “double parents” are very important figures for children. Even science already recognises the benefits that relationships between grandparents and grandchildren can provide for the whole family. According to an Oxford Academic study, children who have contact with their grandparents show more generosity, kindness and a lower predisposition to develop depression and anxiety in the future.
A study by James S. Bates has shown numerous benefits in this relationship, such as:
- Mentoring – they teach various practical skills and knowledge of life to their grandchildren;
- Family tree – grandchildren learn from their grandparents about their ancestors and stories they can pass on;
- Spirituality – this relationship provides comfort, advice and encouragement;
- Recreation – Grandparents are synonymous with joy and fun, so grandchildren have a lot of fun with these important figures;
- Character – they help to build character by giving good examples, teaching about responsibility, ethics and other important concepts.
Honestly? We wouldn’t even need a study to realize how important they are in our children’s lives.
