In the medical offices of gynecologists and specialists in human reproduction, a complaint is repeated: doctor, we are having sex frequently, why don’t we get pregnant?
Statistically, according to the São Paulo Association for the Development of Medicine (SPDM), there is between 15 and 20% probability of a couple becoming pregnant in a single menstrual cycle. In other words, the greater possibility is that the pregnancy will not occur spontaneously, even if the partners are dedicated to the attempts.
“What needs to be observed, in these cases, is the period in which sexual intercourse is taking place”, observes the specialist doctor in human reproduction, Ricardo Nascimento (CRM-SC 3198), from Clínica Fecondare.
The right time for sex is when the woman is ovulating. “It is when sexual intercourse should happen more frequently, as the egg remains in the female organism for only 24 hours”, explains the doctor.
How to calculate the fertile period to know how many times to have intercourse to get pregnant
There is a greater chance of becoming pregnant when sexual intercourse occurs a few days before the date on which ovulation occurs. “Sperm live for up to 72 hours in the female body, so couples can start intercourse a few days before the egg is released to try to get pregnant,” says the doctor.
Ricardo Nascimento says that the consensus is that there should be sexual involvement about three to four times in the female fertile period to increase the chances of conception. He explains how to do the calculation for the woman to know when ovulation happens: “It is necessary to write down the first day of the beginning of the last menstruation and the first day of the beginning of the next, count how many days have passed between one day and the other and divide that number by a half. Then, just count the number of days in the calendar, starting from the date of the beginning of the last menstruation. The day on which the 14th day falls, for example, if the cycle is 28 days in total, is the probable date of ovulation ”.
A more modern and easy way to make this account is to access ovulation calculators on the internet or download applications on your phone, developed to monitor the menstrual cycle of women. Most are free.
While trying to conceive, couples need to be careful, according to the doctor. “Partners who are trying to have a child can make sex a real saga, sometimes unnecessary, because they are unaware of the process and how often they have relationships to get pregnant”, he observes.
The expert’s tip is to keep anxiety away. The factor has a direct influence on the chances of pregnancy occurring. “Thus, the biggest concern of the couple who are trying to get pregnant should be to relax and enjoy the moment together, as pregnancy is a consequence of the couple’s complicity”, emphasizes Ricardo Nascimento.
