Recently, Andressa Ferreira, wife of Thammy Miranda published in her social networks a photo of her son Bento doing an acupuncture session. According to Andressa, the couple opted for this technique because it is fundamental to help control the baby’s sleep. However, the disclosure made the public divided with the opinions if the procedure would be or not a good option for this age group.
“Acupuncture, although it doesn’t seem to be something compatible with the child’s public, if applied by a suitable professional, is a safe method that can help a lot in the development and health of babies and children”, says Daniel Alan Costa, professor Naturopath and Acupuncturist specialist in Bases of Integrative Medicine by Albert Einstein and director of the Brazilian School of Naturopathy.
Still according to Naturopath, the procedure is an excellent treatment option that benefits not only sleep, but also helps to make the baby healthier, because it decreases colic, intestinal problems and even psychological health. “When the needle enters the skin, there is a stimulus from the brain that encourages the body to increase the body’s defenses and thus work on its own healing and the whole process is painless,” explains the teacher.

According to Costa, the procedure is safe and has no relevant side effects, but it is important that it is performed by a qualified professional. “The acupuncture sessions in babies and children are shorter, last between 5 and 15 minutes, besides the needles and the number of stitches are smaller”, emphasizes the specialist.
And for those who do not like traditional acupuncture, the specialist suggests replacing needles with the use of points of light, known as chromotherapy. There is also Auriculotherapy – a procedure that consists of using mustard seeds in the ear and is as effective as classical acupuncture.
Benefits of acupuncture in babies and children
After treatment, the baby or child is reassured, which is beneficial for behaviour and psychological health. “Acupuncture is serene and the parents need not worry whether or not it will affect the health of the child, since this is a technique that only brings benefits. But it is important to stress that this is a complementary treatment and should not replace the use of prescribed medication”, finishes Naturopath.
