Your child is approximately 22 cm / Pampers DE
Your baby is 20 weeks pregnant
Your baby is now about the size of a small sugar melon, it is about 22 cm long and now weighs between 210 and 255 g. You could be holding it in the cupped hand.
By this week, your little one is completely covered in a creamy substance called vernix. It protects the delicate baby skin from the amniotic fluid.
Your baby’s brain has worked incessantly to develop the nerve centers that control his senses. These are now working better and better. This is why your little one also reacts to your activities, outside noises and even to the taste of the amniotic fluid.
You may have already felt the baby roll, dive, and kick in the womb. Now you may feel rhythmic, jerky movements for the first time. Most babies get the occasional hiccup in the womb. It is believed that this is due to cramping of the as yet immature diaphragm. Do not worry, such hiccups are safe for the child.
It sprouts on the head
And this time it’s not just fluff, it’s real hair. Most of this hair falls out about two weeks after giving birth. Further developments in the head area: The bones of the inner ear are now fully formed and the nose is developing its unmistakable shape.
Your 20th week pregnancy
Congratulations! You are already halfway through your pregnancy! The size of your uterus has tripled by the 20th week of pregnancy. During your next check-up, your doctor may find that the fundus is now level with your navel. From now on, your uterus will grow about an inch each week until delivery.
A look inside
An ultrasound scan can help your doctor check the baby’s growth and development, set the due date, check the fetus for possible birth defects, and make sure that the placenta and umbilical cord are all right. Whether you want to know the gender of your child or not, a look inside the womb makes the fact that you will soon be a parent more real.
Did you know?
What do these rhythmic, jerky movements mean? Your baby’s immature diaphragm cramps, which leads to hiccups! Your little one’s head and eyebrows will grow, but any hair they may have at birth will fall out and they will have new ones.
Tip for the expectant mother:
You are now halfway through your pregnancy and can already feel the baby’s movements. If you experience hemorrhoids (swollen veins in your anus) during this time, drink plenty of fluids, eat high-fiber foods, and stay physically active. Ask your doctor about safe, over-the-counter medicines for hemorrhoids.
