Why do I have yellow discharge?
⌨️

There are many reasons for this – from age to hormones to the phase of your menstrual cycle. Over time you will find out what is normal and healthy for you.

However, there is one color change that’s a bit concerning because it can be both normal and abnormal: yellow discharge. Why do we get what causes the yellow discharge, is it healthy? Well… If you have yellow discharge, your body may be trying to tell you something, but it could also be completely normal. It just depends.

A bit confusing, isn’t it? You will learn more about this in the following paragraphs.

Yellow is the natural color of your discharge

Even though whitish or clear is generally considered to be the most common color of discharge, many women turn creamy yellow when their discharge comes into contact with the air. This effect very often occurs just before the onset of your period.

If yellow has always been your normal color of discharge and everything else is fine, then there is nothing to worry about. Instead, assume that this color of discharge is normal for you and anything else is different from normal. If you’re still a bit in doubt: How about keeping a small “discharge diary” and recording all changes in it?

Your period is coming up

Watery, very runny, or thick yellow discharge just before your period is often caused by a little blood getting mixed in. Just take this as a sign that your periods are on the way and you should ALWAYS have your panty liners on hand.

Your period has just ended

There’s a good chance that thick, yellow discharge will appear soon after your period. This is when the discharge thickens, making it harder for infections to enter your body. Your discharge can take on a light cream-yellow or milky-white color.

Basically, it can happen more often during this time that your discharge turns slightly yellowish or brownish. This happens when your uterine lining hasn’t completely broken down over the course of your period, so your body still has some catching up to do.

You’re pregnant

Yellow discharge can occur when your body produces significantly more estrogen. And that’s exactly what happens when you’re pregnant! Fluctuations in your hormone balance are usually simply part of having a baby on the go. So they are nothing to worry about.

If you’re one of those women whose estrogen causes more yellow discharge but aren’t experiencing any worrisome symptoms, the only thing you should do is to stock up on a good supply of ALWAYS panty liners. The practical panty liners ensure that you don’t have to change your underwear several times a day and that you always feel fresh and clean.

Just look at it on the bright side: at least you know that pregnancy discharge doesn’t last forever!

You have bacterial vaginosis

Don’t worry, we won’t hit you with medical terms. The reason behind this is simple: there are a lot of bacteria in your vagina that your body also needs. However, these bacteria must always be kept in a certain balance. When this balance is disturbed, the harmful bacteria take over – and everything goes haywire “down there”.

The most common sign of this is a yellow, watery discharge; to make matters worse, combined with a strong smell of fish. If you are worried about something like this, you should definitely talk to your doctor.

You have an STD, a yeast infection, or another health problem

Another cause of yellow discharge can be a sexually transmitted infection. It also happens more often that the nature of your discharge changes and the discharge becomes thick and lumpy. On top of that, pain and itching in the genital area can occur and the discharge can smell quite bad.

If you notice something like this in yourself, it is urgently time to see a doctor. One particularly common STD is trichomoniasis, which often causes a yellow or green discharge that sometimes looks almost frothy.

Yellow, clumpy discharge, yellow discharge accompanied by a strong odor, burning pain, and other changes in your discharge sometimes indicate a yeast infection. But they can also indicate that something else is not quite right.

If you notice such symptoms in yourself, it is best to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible for a thorough check-up and treatment. Basically, the earlier you leave, the faster you can get the problems under control.

What other reasons are there for yellow discharge?

Changes in your diet and medications can also affect the color of your discharge. This should usually go away on its own after a few days, so diet and medication usually only cause very short-term color changes.

Age can also play a role in yellow discharge, as hormones go through quite a ebb and flow throughout life. However, this alone is not a cause for concern.

How can I get rid of yellow discharge?

Of course, if your yellow discharge is fairly healthy and normal, it doesn’t need treatment – you don’t have to do anything! If you don’t like that wet feeling and are bothered by the discharge or unsightly stains on your underwear, ALWAYS panty liners offer a quick and convenient solution. Our panty liners absorb the discharge completely so you can feel fresh and clean all day long.

If you notice your discharge turning bright or yellowish-green, there’s probably something more serious at play. If other symptoms occur as well – such as a lumpy or foamy discharge, pain during sex or on the toilet, swelling or itching – you should make your way to your doctor right away.

Most of the causes can be eliminated quickly and easily with medication. And in the meantime, it’s best to use ALWAYS panty liners, which absorb the discharge and reliably neutralize odors. And since our panty liners have been thoroughly dermatologically tested, you can wear them every day.
