A thrombosis is the sudden blockage of a blood vessel by a blood clot. There is an increased risk of venous thrombosis in childbirth. Overall, however, it is a rare complication. Around 0.1 percent of women in childbed are affected. After a cesarean section, the risk of venous thrombosis is 2 to 5 times higher than after a vaginal birth.
The thrombosis itself, which usually occurs in the leg, is primarily painful. The pulmonary embolism as a possible consequence of a thrombosis is really dangerous. Fortunately, a pulmonary embolism occurs very rarely during childbirth, in 2014 in 49 women in Germany – in over 690,000 births. Nevertheless, it is important to prevent thrombosis and, if it does occur, to treat it quickly and correctly.
In most cases, various causes work together in a thrombosis. Due to the hormonal change during childbirth, it can happen that the blood clots faster. Lack of exercise and varicose veins, which may have formed during pregnancy, contribute to blood flow slowing down. In addition, the enlarged uterus can restrict blood flow in the large veins in the groin. Some women also have a hereditary increased tendency to thrombosis.
Signs of a thrombosis are sudden pain and an overheated, swollen leg. Anyone who notices such signs should seek medical advice as soon as possible.
Regular exercise in the fresh air and postpartum exercises promote blood circulation and help prevent thrombosis. It is also important not to smoke. If there is an increased risk of thrombosis due to the history, preventive medication (prophylaxis) and compression stockings are necessary in the first few days after the birth. This is especially true after a caesarean section.
