If the nipple is cracked or even bleeding, that breast should be rested until it has completely healed. You can pump at the lowest level.
You can temporarily breastfeed with nipple shields. You can get these in different sizes in specialist shops or in pharmacies. After putting on the cap, squeeze some milk into the nipple so that the child can get the milk faster at first. When it comes to hygiene, treat the cone like a dummy.
Start with the other breast and only towards the end apply to the sore breast.
Squeeze the milk by hand and give it to your child with the bottle or a spoon. If your child is not very hungry, you can also freeze the milk.
Special breast creams or ointments that your doctor can recommend or prescribe can also help with nipple care. Make sure, however, that you do not use any breast care ointments containing paraffin (eg Vaseline). Proven ointments contain marigold blossoms, comfrey leaves and roots, yarrow leaves and lady’s mantle herb.
A natural remedy is to bathe the breast in sage tea or black tea several times a day, then blow-dry, rub St. John’s wort oil or purified wool fat on the warts and place black tea bags on the nipples as compresses.
Keep the chest uncovered as much as possible.
Careful rubbing with ice cubes immediately before breastfeeding reduces the pain.
