Around the 20th week, a very special moment finally comes for many women who are pregnant for the first time: They feel how their baby is moving in the stomach. While your little one often tickles you gently at first, it will become more and more noticeable in the near future.
“If a pregnant woman has not yet felt anything, there is nothing to worry about,” says Dr. Anke Diemert, who leads the PRINCE (Prenatal Identification of Childrens Health) study on prenatal imprinting. “For example, the reason may simply be that the placenta is at the front of the uterus.” Then it could take up to the 22nd or 23rd week before the woman can feel the first movements.
“It also depends on how sensitive the pregnant woman is,” says Diemert. “It varies a lot from woman to woman.” Most of the day the baby doesn’t do much gymnastics anyway: it now sleeps about 20 hours a day. “But it can also be active during sleep phases,” says Diemert.
The placenta has now reached its final thickness of around two to four centimeters. Their diameter is about ten centimeters. The baby’s arms and legs slowly assume their final proportions. If you are expecting a girl, her uterus is already formed. In addition, the vagina has now formed. However, the external genital organs of the unborn child do not yet have their final shape. In girls, the clitoris is still relatively large and protrudes from the labia.
The baby now has half-time when it comes to length growth: in the 20th week, fetuses weigh an average of 330 grams and are about 25 centimeters long. In the second half of pregnancy, they then become an average of twice as long and around ten times as heavy.

Halftime! You are now halfway through your pregnancy. The second trimester of pregnancy is the best time for a relaxing holiday: the initial symptoms are usually gone, but the baby bump is not yet too much of a strain. In addition, if you have no children yet, you can really enjoy the togetherness with your partner far away from everyday life. The prerequisite is that the pregnancy goes smoothly and your doctor has no objections. And you should avoid exotic vacation areas with poor hygienic conditions and inadequate medical care, as well as malaria areas.
Tip: flies during pregnancy
Flying is possible in the second trimester of pregnancy, as long as nothing speaks against it from a medical point of view. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Wear compression stockings during the flight. They relieve the veins.
- Make sure you have an aisle seat near the toilet when you check in.
- Make sure you drink enough. Still mineral water or tea are best.
- Get up regularly and walk up and down the aisle a bit.
Attention: Some airlines no longer take pregnant women with them from the 28th week of pregnancy, others from the 34th or 36th week of pregnancy. Some ask for a doctor’s or midwife’s certificate. Check with your airline. In addition, some countries have special entry requirements for pregnant women.
