Placental calcification 2nd/3rd Degrees normal in the 39th week of pregnancy?
Ask:
Hi there,
I was last on March 4th. (37+4) at the gynecologist, everything was fine there. The supply of the umbilical cord was measured and, according to the doctor, was optimal. Child’s size, too, was estimated at 2600 grams. Today (38+2) I am for the emergency consultation because my stomach has been hard for 3 days and I have stomach and abdominal pain and pain in my navel. A ctg was done that was ok. Since the practice was very full, I was quickly pushed in between. My doctor wasn’t there either, so I was examined by her colleague. The cervix is already a funnel. The child is still lying with his head down. She sounded once very briefly (not even a minute) said the placenta was 2nd/3rd. degree calcified. When I asked if that was bad, she just said no. I’m hearing about calcification for the first time. She said it could be that she will come this weekend and if anything I should go to the hospital. The baby and the care were not measured, I was only asked if I smoked. I’m 27 and a non-smoker. Is calcification a concern? Do I have to go to the hospital at the weekend even if I’m not yet in labor?
I now feel more insecure than before and have had breakfast. I am now very concerned that my baby will no longer be cared for. How can it be that the placenta in not even. 2 weeks so heavily calcified?
The next appointment is only 2 days before my ET on 03/26. So only in 1.5 weeks. Does the supply have to be checked by then?
I left today because there were 3 weeks between my appointments instead of 2 and I am unsure.

Placental calcification 2nd/3rd Degrees normal in the 39th week of pregnancy?
Hello Judy,
1. The placenta can of course calcify to an increased extent at the end of the pregnancy
2. The assessment then depends on the course and the overall impression: are there any peculiarities from the pregnancy? How has the child been growing so far, what are the current dimensions of the child now, what is the amount of amniotic fluid? Etc.
3. In this respect, the most sensible measure in the situation will be to have the condition checked promptly in the clinic by the experienced senior physician. This includes an ultrasound to check the growth of the child, the placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid. At the same time, all important vessels should be checked in the Doppler and the CTG can provide further information on the supply situation.
