How reliable is the ovulation calculator in calculating the fertile days?

The more regular the period, the more accurately you can calculate your ovulation. However, hormonal fluctuations, stress, medication or climate changes can affect your cycle length. This often makes an exact determination of the fertile days and ovulation difficult. If you have an irregular cycle, consider your ovulation date as a guide to help you narrow down your fertile period.

Calculate ovulation: What other methods are there apart from the ovulation calculator?

calendar method

The best known is the calendar method, also known as the Knaus-Ogino method, for calculating ovulation. You must record your cycle in an ovulation calendar for at least one year in order to be able to calculate your ovulation. Since menstrual cycles are not always regular, the number of days of the longest and shortest cycle in recent months is used to determine the fertile window. 18 days are deducted from the shortest cycle and 11 days from the longest cycle.

Calculation example:
Shortest cycle has 28 days: 28 days minus 18 = 10
Longest cycle has 34 days: 34 days minus 11 = 23

This results in a fertile period from the 10th to the 23rd day of the cycle, while the infertile days are before the 10th and after the 23rd day of the cycle.

temperature method

Regularly measuring your morning temperature (basal body temperature) also provides information about your fertile days. During the menstrual cycle, the body temperature of most women changes. In the first half of the cycle, i.e. from the beginning of the menstrual period to ovulation, the basal body temperature corresponds to the normal temperature of around 36.5 degrees Celsius. Shortly after ovulation, the temperature rises by about 0.2-0.4 degrees Celsius. After the menstrual period, it goes down again.

In order to get meaningful values, you should measure and note your basal body temperature over a period of at least three months. Proceed as follows: Measure your basal body temperature regularly in the morning immediately after waking up and before you get up. It should always be measured at the same time, with the same thermometer and in the same way (preferably rectally). The course of the temperature curve provides information about the fertile days. After several monthly cycles, you can read off ovulation from the curves, provided the cycle does not fluctuate too much.

Please note: Illness, alcohol consumption and irregular bedtimes can affect the temperature and therefore not provide an accurate result when calculating ovulation.

slime method

It becomes even more accurate if you use the slime method in addition to the temperature method. The consistency and appearance of cervical mucus (cervical mucus) change over the course of a cycle. Immediately after your period, your mucus will be cloudy and clumpy. On the fertile days, it becomes clearer and takes on a sticky consistency.

Assessing the cervical mucus is not easy at first and requires some practice. For meaningful results, you should check the mucus every day at the same time of the day, ideally even several times a day in the initial phase. To do this, take some mucus from the vaginal entrance between your index finger and thumb and pull it apart. If it “spins” threads and looks like raw egg whites, that’s a sign of impending ovulation. You should observe and document the cervical mucus over several cycles in order to be able to assess your fertile days.

ovulation test

Ovulation can also be determined with an ovulation test, also known as an ovulation test. Such tests are available in drugstores and pharmacies. The principle of an ovulation test is comparable to a pregnancy test. You put some urine on a test strip and you can then see from the discoloration whether you are about to be fertile. The test measures the level of Lhuteinizing hormone in the urine, which is elevated 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. Before you use the test, you should know your cycle in order to be able to narrow down your fertile days. The test is not always clear. Illnesses and medication, individually different LH-luteinizing hormone levels and the sensitivity of the respective test system can influence the result.

What happens at ovulation?

An egg cell grows in one of the ovaries every month. It is surrounded by an egg sac (follicle). When the egg cell is mature, ovulation occurs. The egg cell bursts out of the follicle and travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus. She is now fertile for 12 to 24 hours. The remaining egg shell produces the hormone progesterone, which stimulates the lining of the womb to grow and prepare it for implantation of a fertilized egg. If fertilization does not take place, the cell is excreted together with the lining of the uterus during the next menstrual period.

Can you feel ovulation?

Some women react very sensitively to physical changes related to ovulation, while others don’t notice anything at all. Nevertheless, there are some signs that indicate that ovulation is imminent or has just occurred:

• middle pain
  Some women often feel a pulling, stabbing and one-sided pain in their abdomen before ovulation: the so-called middle pain.
• Changed vaginal discharge
  As you approach ovulation, your cervical mucus (cervical mucus) becomes more liquid, clear, and sticky.
• Increased libido
  You can rely on nature and our instincts: many women feel more like having sex in the days around ovulation.
• Soft cervix
  When the fertile days begin, the cervix changes: it becomes softer and opens slightly.
• temperature differences
  Immediately after ovulation, the morning basal body temperature is slightly elevated.
• chest pain
  The increased progesterone release just before ovulation can lead to a feeling of tension in the breasts.
