Communicating with the newborn and a few months old baby is essential to help him develop language right away and become aware of the reality that surrounds him. But how do you ‘talk’ to the baby?
by Alessia Altavilla
Although not yet endowed with the ability to verbally respond to the stimuli that surround him, the baby of a few months is able to absorb the solicitations that come to him from the outside world, introject them and transform them into experiences that then become language, expressions, awareness of the reality.
But how can you communicate correctly with your baby?
First of all, a premise: from the first day of life, children ‘learn’. Although their eyesight is not fully developed, although the word is destined to arrive several months later, although crying (and some gestures) is their best form of expression, the little ones learn mainly from what mum and dad can manage. convey them in terms of communication and stimuli.
Here, then, is how to help them right away in this complex and fascinating path of awareness and growth.
- THE WORD FIRST
The fact that children are unable to respond, it is vital that mum and dad talk to them as if they were miniature adults. If the voice can be modulated according to the circumstances (higher, lower, softer, more joyful …), the words must always be clearly articulated, not distorted, not invented. Many parents, on the other hand, tend to adopt artificial language with babies that does not correspond to their usual way of speaking. Nothing could be more wrong: talking to the newborn should not be too distant from how one would speak to an older child who is able to express himself verbally.
- THE IMPORTANCE OF NON-VERBAL LANGUAGE
It is essential that mum and dad learn to accompany the words with the most appropriate expressions to make the child understand the context in which he finds himself. While playing with the child, therefore, the mouth may bend towards a laugh or a smile; when you are breastfeeding or during the change, you can have a sweeter expression; if the child does something he shouldn’t (after 6/7 months) the reprimand will be reinforced by a harsher expression …
The same goes for body language which must never be downplayed. If the words, therefore, must be as close to common speech, the expression can be accentuated to help the baby understand what is happening.
- BORN TO READ
Reading aloud, as we have said several times, is also very important during the first month. Although, in fact, the child will not understand what is read to him and as strange as it may seem, he will learn to recognize the sound of the voice of his mother and father, he will learn the words that are repeated to him, he will be able to understand simpler situations, he will be able to able to relax and enjoy the moment.
- POWER TO MUSIC
Songs are also a valid support that leads the newborn towards the development of verbal expression skills. Music, therefore, must be a constant presence in the homes of new parents who will be able to opt for any musical form at the beginning and, later, indulge the baby’s taste.
- CLEAR AND ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS
At home, on a walk, in the car, while playing, when making meals … mum and dad have the duty not to stop describing what is happening to the child. That little by little he will learn to contextualize situations and to associate words with the perception of reality.
