We make a calendar for children at home, which is useful and fun. Useful because it helps children to understand the concept of time passing and to teach them what weeks and months are and that all together form the year, and fun because you can choose with them the photos or images to decorate it.
- 1 computer with Microsoft Office package
- 1 printer
- 1 folder with pliers
if you don’t have a PC and printer
- colored cardboard
- glue stick
- photographs or newspaper clippings
- coloured pens.
Procedure with the PC
We choose an image possibly not too dark or colored which can be a photo of our children or one of their favorite characters, copy the image with the right button and paste it into the images of the Microsoft Office Picture Manager (you can find it in programs – Microsoft Office – Office tools).
Once we have the image from the Picture Manager menu, take FILE and PRINT, the print menu will appear. With the help of the printer options, let’s print it on a normal full-page A4 sheet.
Then with a Word sheet we insert a table with 7 columns and 5 rows from the table menu and create a table where in the first row we will enter the name of the days and in the rows below, taking into account the day of the week in which the first of the month begins , insert the numbers from 1 to the end of the month (remember how many days each month has).
We take our photo print, insert it into the printer instead of the new paper and make a printout of the table.
The table will be printed on the photo.
Of course, with the help of the computer, we can customize the calendar in a thousand different ways. For example, using only a part of the sheet for the photo and inserting the table in the remainder, or making a large grid and inserting an image in each box, in addition to the day number.
If we use colored paper in this second way, the calendar will be even more cheerful.
Process by hand
first of all we take pictures (photos or clippings) that we want to use and place them on the colored cardboard to get an idea of how we want to arrange them.
When we have decided where to put the images with the pencil we pass on the outline in order to remember where we want to apply them. We write the name of the month in big block letters at the top. Then with the ruler we make a grid of 7 columns and 5 rows in the space we have available taking into account the images. Once this is done, insert the days of the week on our colored card in the first row, then insert the dates.
With the glue stick we glue the photos or cutouts around our grid as we had previously decided. We can then apply small things with the glue inside the boxes to remind us of particular dates.
Again the possibilities are as endless as your imagination.
The operation must be repeated for 12 months.
There are several possibilities to hang our calendar, either with a folder with pliers or with a clothes hanger and two clothespins, but we can attach it in the kitchen with the help of fridge magnets.
We create the months taking into account, for example, the changing climate or the activities that take place, you can take a photo especially for the calendar when the opportunity arises, perhaps stimulating the children to find new things that remind us of a certain period of the year .
In the various months we can highlight important dates such as the birthdays of family members and the most important holidays, customizing our calendar in a unique way.
Prepare the twelve months and overlap them on the folder with the pliers.
It is possible to hang it or leave it on the desk and every day we can see with the children that the day of the calendar has changed, perhaps by putting a cross on the day now gone and making considerations on the time that passes and the climate and how impatient we are for a date to arrive. particularly important.
