Since even home-made masks have been declared suitable by the government as tools of protection from covid, many have tried their hand at work. Here are some indications to make them safe.

Since you can use handmade masks to protect themselves and protect others from the risk of contagion, there are many who have ventured into the realization at home.
In fact, the advantages of such a choice are multiple:
- first of all, costs are reduced (cloth masks are washed every time and can be used for much longer periods than surgical masks that are purchased in pharmacies);
- moreover, it makes its own contribution against waste and pollution;
- finally, home-made masks have the advantage of being able to almost transform themselves into fashion objects, with customizations that follow the style and tastes of the wearer.
But what are the rules for making them safely?
move towards high-weight natural fabrics (thick cotton is perfect). On the other hand, fabrics that can flake or discolour during use should be avoided.
- HOW THEY ARE REALIZED:
before proceeding, the pattern is made on a sheet (a surgical mask can be used as a base) and the fabric is cut following its contours.
At least three layers must be overlapped, sewn together from all sides. Many ‘do it yourself’ masks have a pocket that allows you to insert disposable filters that can be purchased at the pharmacy.
- FORM AND CONSISTENCY
It is important that shape and consistency guarantee maximum breathability: the mask must not tighten too much and must not be wide (especially on the sides), but must adhere perfectly to the face (therefore, take the measurements well when making it) and cover the face from the nose to chin.
- HOW TO WASH THE MASKS:
The masks must be washed at 60 ° before any use and must never be washed together with other clothing (this, in general, applies to all PPE that require washing separate from the rest of the linen).
The ideal is to dry them in the open air, possibly in the sun.
- WHEN TO USE THEM:
Home masks are not medical aids. Their use, therefore, is conditioned by the environment in which one finds oneself and by the state of health of oneself and of those around us. They are therefore perfect for carrying out ordinary activities of daily life (for example, when the children will return to school in September and will need to change the mask every day), but they are not indicated in hospitals, when you are sick or by subjects at risk due to age or the presence of previous pathologies. In these cases, it is recommended to use certified masks.
