Is It Normal To Have Diarrhea During Pregnancy?

It is not common to have diarrhea during pregnancy. (Constipation is much more likely than loose stool in pregnant women). However, some women report mild diarrhea in late pregnancy just before going into labor, and if you are less than 37 weeks old, diarrhea can be a sign of premature labor.
What Causes Diarrhea During Pregnancy?
Just like when you’re not pregnant, you can get diarrhea from an illness or from something you have eaten. Some of the causes of diarrhea during pregnancy include:
- A stomach virus or food poisoning, such as listeriosis
- Certain antibiotics or antacids
- Sugar-free candies
- Dairy products (if you are lactose intolerant)
- Digestive problems from irritable bowel syndrome or an inflammatory bowel disease
Can diarrhea during pregnancy be a sign of something serious?
Yes, but it’s very unusual. If you have not had a bowel movement for several days and then suddenly develop watery diarrhea, you may experience constipation (also called a bowel obstruction).
In this rare condition, the hardened, dry stool blocks the colon. Watery stool sometimes leaks around it and shows up as diarrhea.
If you have a fecal impaction, you will likely have other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and a bloated (or bloated) stomach. Call your doctor or health care provider right away if you develop these signs.
What should I do if I have stomach virus or food poisoning?
If you’ve contracted a stomach virus or mild food poisoning, drink plenty of water to maintain your hydration, avoid dairy products, and stick to easily digestible foods like bananas, rice, soup, or toast. If you have severe diarrhea, do not eat fatty foods until you feel better. In 24 hours or less, you should feel better.
Call your health care provider to tell them about your symptoms and ask them if it is safe to take over-the-counter antidiarrheal drugs.
When should I call my healthcare provider about diarrhea during pregnancy?
Call your doctor if you have diarrhea that lasts for more than a day or any of these symptoms:
- stomach pain
- Explosive diarrhea
- Diarrhea with blood or mucus
- Dry mouth, dizziness, or lightheadedness (signs of dehydration)
Contact your doctor right away if you have diarrhea and also feel like your baby is moving less often or vigorously than usual, or if you have signs of preterm labor such as:
- Regular or frequent contractions
- More vaginal discharge or discharge that is watery, bloody, or mucous
- Pressure or pain in your pelvis or lower abdomen that lasts or gets worse
