Breast pain during menopause: why does the breast tighten
Table of Contents
The most common cause are the hormones!
How exactly hormone-related breast pain is triggered is not yet known. The hormone fluctuations are probably causing the problems. This is why breast pain of this kind occurs particularly around menstruation. This is well known to many women in the context of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). And the menopause is also characterized by massive hormone fluctuations.
If there is a lack of estrogen, water retention often occurs. This so-called edema causes the breast to swell. As a result, there is a feeling of tension. Eyelids, hands, feet and legs are also often affected by swelling. The hormone prolactin also causes tension in the breasts. Normally, it prepares the breast for milk storage. During menopause, however, it increases blood flow to the breasts.
If there is a lack of progesterone, other symptoms are typical:
- Pains,
- touch sensitivity,
- feeling of heat in the breasts,
- occasionally also palpable nodules and hardening.
In general, most complaints are bilateral. Mastodynia, as the hormone-related chest pain is called, is unfortunately unpleasant in most cases. Fortunately, however, it is harmless.
In addition to pain, some women also feel small lumps in their breasts. In this case, there is probably a cycle-dependent fibrocystic mastopathy. This leads to a hormone-related build-up of connective tissue in the breast. This additionally formed tissue is referred to as fibrosis. In addition, fluid-filled blisters, so-called cysts, develop in this tissue. These palpable nodules are mostly benign.
A more or less pronounced increase in weight is also typical of the menopause. It is often associated with a hormone-related redistribution of adipose tissue. If the fat is increasingly deposited in the breasts, this can lead to breast growth (secondary macromastia) during the menopause. If the breast becomes very large and heavy, pain often develops.
