15th week of gestation and constant light bleeding due to placenta previa
Ask:
Dear Doctor. Bluni,
I am very unsure because I was diagnosed with placenta previa totalis (as far as that can be said in this week of pregnancy) and my gynecologist made me very scared because of the light bleeding that I have every 2-3 days could lose the child.
The bleeding is never regular, usually only spotting, sometimes a little bright red blood.
The doctor at the hospital I went to for a bleed over the weekend said there was no need to worry if there was very little bleeding, most likely the placenta would pull up as the uterus grew and everything would be fine. Is that also likely with a placenta that is completely in front of the cervix?
Who am I supposed to believe now?
From what I’ve read, placenta previa tends to bleed in the 3rd trimester, but I’m not quite there yet. Is it normal to bleed despite bed rest?
What is the reason for this, is it a slight placental detachment or what is causing the bleeding? A hmatoma could not be detected. Do I have to reckon with the fact that the bleeding can become very heavy even now, or does this usually only happen with the first practice contractions?
Thank you for your rating!

Hi there,
1. Yes, the clinician is absolutely right
2. The chances of upward migration are lower when the placenta is completely in front of the internal uterus
3. Please take a look at our keyword search under the keyword “placenta deep-seated”. There you will find answers and information to your question.
4. In rare cases, it may actually be necessary to lie down or to be admitted to the hospital, and even then bleeding from the marginal vessels can happen.
However, please coordinate this with your gynecologist and, above all, with an experienced specialist in a perinatal center.
