Pregnancy test: when is it possible?
Many women wonder when they can take a pregnancy test. When does an hCG test give a reliable result? So is it worth doing a pregnancy test? Whether you are planning to have a baby or not, you certainly want to know as soon as possible.
When do you take a pregnancy test?
If you have had unprotected sex and suspect you are pregnant, you should take a pregnancy test to clarify. Maybe you are already feeling some physical changes like nausea or breast tenderness that can indicate a baby in your body? The absence of the period is a sure sign of pregnancy.4
There are the following Methods to determine pregnancy:
The urine test to detect pregnancy works because of a reaction of the antibodies. The hCG antibodies on the test strip bind to the antigens present in the urine. Due to other additives on the test strip, this process then triggers a color reaction.
When exactly you can determine the pregnancy depends on the method chosen.
When is a pregnancy test safe?
Pregnancy tests that evaluate the urine differ in the timing of application. There is a classic pregnancy test and an early test.
Time calculator for pregnancy test
The classic pregnancy tests can be used from the 1st day of the missed period. You can only determine if you are pregnant if the concentration of the hCG hormone in the body is higher. When you can take a pregnancy test depends on the sensitivity of the test. The more advanced the pregnancy and the higher the concentration of the pregnancy hormone, the more meaningful the test result is. The result is very reliable 3-5 days after the absence of the period.

The cyclotest pregnancy test is positive for samples that show an hCG level of around 25 mIU/ml or higher. The test can be used from the first day the period is due. At this date, the test usually shows a clear test result.
But how to calculate the due date of the period or the time 4 days before the due date? You can find ovulation calculators online. However, these are based on general cycle lengths and not on the actual cycle conditions of the current cycle.
Simple online calculators are therefore not suitable as time calculators for a pregnancy test! Also, you should never take uncertain signs such as nausea or chest pain as a starting point for a test. Also oracles with the ovulation test, which is often discussed in pregnancy forums, is not recommended.
For example, a cycle app based on the basal body temperature method or NFP can provide reliable information about the time of conception and the probable length of the cycle. If you are unsure when you ovulate, the cyclotest mySense app even calculates your fertile and highly fertile days!
Start of the early pregnancy test
The cyclotest early pregnancy test is positive for samples that show an hCG level of around 10 mIU/ml or higher. The test can be used up to 4 days before the bleeding is due. A few days before the expected menstrual period, the hCG test shows a correct test result in most cases.
If you want to be sure quickly, the early test is perfect. It can be used at home up to 4 days before your period is due.
The graphic shows an example of a 28-day cycle from when you can take a pregnancy test and when you can take an early pregnancy test based on the urine.
blood test and ultrasound
In contrast to the pregnancy test from drugstores & Co. is the blood test, which is carried out by the gynecologist. Pregnancy can be detected in the blood as early as one week before the expected menstrual period.5 In the first few weeks, the hormone concentration in the blood rises steadily. The maximum is reached between the 8th and 12th week. After that, the placenta can produce the pregnancy-maintaining hormones itself. The hCG levels in the blood then drop. A blood test from the 20th week would only be weakly positive.
Just a few days after you have missed your period, the doctor can use a vaginal ultrasound to show that an egg has implanted in the lining of the uterus and that you are pregnant. The amniotic sac in the uterus is made visible using an ultrasound device; later, from the 7th week of pregnancy, also the heart sound.
hCG table in the first weeks of pregnancy
In the normal course, the hCG hormone can be detected in the urine as early as 7 days after fertilization. This means that about 2 days have passed since the egg implanted in the uterus. The concentration of the hormone doubles every 1.3 to 2 days. At the time of the missed menstrual period, the concentration has already risen to approx. 100 mIU/ml. At the end of the first trimester of pregnancy (12th week), peak values of 100,000 to 200,000 mIU/ml can be detected.
The pregnancy hormone therefore shows a specific course: the hormone occurs shortly after fertilization and shows an increase in concentration in early pregnancy up to around the 12th week of pregnancy. For this reason, it is particularly suitable for the early detection of pregnancy using a urine pregnancy test or a blood test at the gynecologist.1, 2, 3
However, the course of the hCG hormone varies from woman to woman. Therefore, pregnancy tests or early tests with week determination, which indicate the week of pregnancy, should be treated with caution. The exact week can be determined, for example, if you know when ovulation took place by observing your cycle.

How do I use the pregnancy test correctly?
The reliability of pregnancy tests depends not only on how far along the pregnancy is, but also on whether the hCG test is used correctly. Please also read the package leaflet!
A pregnancy test is easy to use. The urine stream can either be caught in a container or the absorbent tip can be held directly in the urine stream. The duration should be at least 10 seconds.
The test can be performed at any time of the day. The first morning urine is recommended. The result can be read after 5 minutes. Important note: The test may no longer be evaluated after 10 minutes.
Alcohol consumption can affect the result. The test strip has a cap for improved hygiene.
Why take a pregnancy test in the morning?
In principle, a pregnancy test can be carried out at any time of the day. For a test to be meaningful, it is best to use it first thing in the morning when you go to the toilet.
The morning urine contains the most hCG. Urine can collect in the bladder overnight and as a result contains a high concentration of the pregnancy hormone. Water or other beverages that you consume throughout the day dilute the urine and thus the hormone concentration.
Evaluate pregnancy test result
The test stick contains a result window, the display of which should be interpreted as follows:
If the result on the test strip is positive, two colored lines appear – a control line and a test line. These two lines mean that a pregnancy has been detected.
It should be noted that the color intensity of the test line can vary. The different discoloration can be explained by the fact that the hormone concentration changes during pregnancy. However, even a faintly colored test line indicates a positive pregnancy test.
If the result is negative, only the control line will appear, the test line will not appear on the test stick. This means that the urine test could not detect pregnancy.
The control line fulfills its control function in that it shows whether there was a sufficient amount of urine and the hCG test was performed correctly. The result of the test is accordingly invalid if no lines or only one colored test line appears. In this case, the hCG test should be repeated using a new test strip and new urine.
The graphic shows you the possible results at a glance: Is my pregnancy test positive, negative or invalid?
Pregnancy test positive – what to do?
The pregnancy test showed a positive result? Congratulations – you are pregnant! You should go to the gynecologist now. In most cases, however, you will only receive the appointment from the 6th to the 8th of the month. SSW, because then a heart action can already be detected.
