Nub theory: gender determination by ultrasound? – Hello parents
Nub theory: safe or not?
Although it is most important to most parents that their child is born healthy, there are some who want to influence the gender of their unborn child the most. Allegedly there are some methods with which it should be possible to calculate the probability of a boy or girl using the ovulation calendar, for example. From a scientific standpoint, it remains a 50-50 chance. And gender determination at an early stage of pregnancy simply remains imprecise. Even with the NUB theory, it is difficult to make a reliable prediction in the first trimester. Dr. Heling urges caution:
“The method is very unsafe. There are no need to data on the quality of the statement. If anything, one should speak of a trend. “
In addition to the uncertain prognosis, there is also the matter of the law. According to the German Genetic Diagnostics Act (GenDG) doctors are only allowed to reveal the sex of the unborn child after the 12th week of pregnancy:
“Will be on the occasion of an investigation […] If the sex of an embryo or fetus has been determined, this can be communicated to the pregnant woman with her consent at the end of the twelfth week of pregnancy. “
This is to prevent abortions that are performed because the child is not the desired gender. In Germany, an abortion is possible up to the 12th week of pregnancy without penalty. Once this time has passed, doctors are allowed to officially disclose the gender.
And even after this period has passed, it is often difficult to correctly determine the gender, as not every baby is necessarily willing to show. A reasonably reliable result “The anatomical expression of the sex is available for fine diagnostics at about 22 weeks of gestation,” says Dr. Heling. In addition, there are very few fetal diseases or malformations where such an early gender diagnosis would make sense. “[…] So there is no medical relevance here. “
Actually, however, the baby’s gender is of secondary importance. Much more important is that your baby is born safe and sound – isn’t it?
