Urticaria in children: the symptoms and causes of urticaria in pediatrics and how long it lasts. Natural remedies and how to intervene for itching and irritation
Urticaria in children
More than a disease, urticaria can be considered a nuisance or, even better, the manifestation of a strange event that is taking place in the child’s body. Let’s see why it manifests itself thereurticaria in children and what are the causes and the most suitable treatments.

Urticaria in children symptoms
It manifests itself with a strong widespread itching all over the skin, the presence of numerous circumscribed wheals of various sizes (the size can range from 1 to 2 mm, up to a few centimeters, depending on the extent of the body reaction to the phenomenon in progress).
The presence of these swellings has a limited duration, from 24 to 48 hours maximum, then tending to disappear. The manifestation of wheals is also often accompanied by swelling of the tongue, lips, eyes and mouth, a reaction more frequent in adults than in children.
THE most common symptoms of urticaria in children they are, therefore:
- Itchy, pink or red swollen areas on the skin: s is a central swelling of varying size often surrounded by erythema;
- duration in classic cases between 1 and 24 hours, with the possibility of disappearance from the place of origin and reappearance in other locations.
Hives in children causes
The reasons that trigger this reaction have allergic origin, especially when urticaria occurs immediately after taking a drug or other dietary substance. It can also be chronic in nature, and in these cases, of course, a thorough medical examination is recommended.
Urticaria occurs due to a chemical process that takes place inside the body: chemical mediators are released (in particular the known histamine) which lead to this type of immediate and evident response.
They are predominantly foods or drugs to trigger the body reaction, due to an allergic response. Penicillin, vaccines or food substances such as fish, egg, hazelnuts and peanuts, oranges, peaches, milk are the main causes of allergies and therefore of hives. When it comes to non-chronic urticaria, the annoying itch accompanied by wheals has a temporary duration.
In many other cases the origin, rather than due to a food factor, can be triggered by viral infections – hepatitis B, for example – or respiratory infections.
Other irritating causes for the little one are the cold, physical exertion, sudden emotions or those that it cannot manage, or due to other factors such as insect bites, contact with irritants.
Parental concerns are accentuated when the urticaria shows no sign of disappearing: it can even last over 6 weeks, so we will talk about chronic urticaria.
How long does urticaria last in children
The presence of itchy, swollen wheals around the extremities of the face can appear immediately after taking a drug, after about 15-20 minutes, and in this case it will not be difficult to understand the cause of the discomfort. If the mother is unable to associate any event with this phenomenon, it could be an acute form of urticaria and the cause should be investigated thoroughly: it could result from an intestinal infection or even respiratory.
Many times, the origin of chronic urticaria is attributed to allergies, and for this reason the response to allergy tests is required, which can also prove to be negative. At that point, where does the manifestation originate? It could derive from the presence in the body of autoantibodies, that is, internally produced antibodies that are triggered against one’s system: we are talking, in this case, of autoimmune diseases. In fact, urticaria often occurs in children with celiac disease or even thyroiditis.
Urticaria in children remedies
If we talk about isolated manifestations, then it is possible to cure it with the use of antihistamines or, in severe cases, with cortisone. If the cause is of allergic origin linked to a drug or food, the intake of the substance must be absolutely forbidden. In the case of more important cases, the doctor will indicate the best behavior to take to remove it
