Last days of mad and desperate study for millions of Italian students, struggling with their holiday homework before returning to school. And if someone, farsighted like Aesop’s ant, ‘closed the file’ between June and July, “about 4 million dragged on their work, sipping it at least in part until September”. Word of the pediatrician Italo Farnetani, lecturer at the Free University of Human Sciences and Technological Studies of Malta, which for Adnkronos Salute has created a estimate of the ‘holiday homework’ situation for pupils aged 7 to 18. “About 150 thousand – assures Farnetani – will end up not doing them at all”.
A little surprise the pediatrician – for years proud advocate of the futility of holiday homework, which for him should be abolished – ‘reject’ the ants: “There are 2 million pupils who got rid of the burden of homework immediately after the end of school or in any case by the month of July, giving up free time with friends, relaxation and physical activity to stress on books and notebooks. Perhaps they are the ones who have achieved less from summer homework, as they have become accustomed to doing them in an unmotivated way. Moreover, now they will have forgotten everything, or almost: they will not even be able to benefit fromrefresher effect“.
About 250,000 children and adolescents, on the other hand, concentrated all their homework in September: they are the real ‘cicadas’, but according to the pediatrician “they are also the students who made the best choice: they enjoyed their holidays, they arrived rested and happy in September, and these homework done in the approach of the school year will serve them as an effective refresher, a ‘warm-up’ before returning to school, which, however, to my opinion should rather be concentrated in the first weeks of school “.
“At the same time the ‘cicadas’ will still comply with school duties, even if unjust and unmotivated, assigned by teachers. In fact, we consider that 150,000 will arrive at school without having done their holiday homework “. Someone will copy, someone else will trust in the lack of checks by teachers and professors.” Another mistake – concludes Farnetani – because diligent pupils will be penalized. If the holiday homework is given – the message to the teachers – then it needs to be checked. Rather my invitation is addressed to guys who know they have accumulated gaps: use these last few days to fill them, before starting another uphill school year “, he concludes.
