The March 6 we celebrate the Day of the Righteous of humanity dedicated to keeping alive and renewing the memory of those who, in every time and in every place, have done good by saving human lives, fought in favor of human rights during the genocides and defended the dignity of the person by refusing to yield to totalitarianism and discrimination between human beings. Let’s see how this day was born.
Established on 10 May 2012 by the European Parliament, the Day of the Righteous is dedicated to those who have opposed crimes against humanity and have managed to prevent them with the sacrifice of their lives. In Italy, “civil solemnity” was recognized in December 2019. The starting point was the establishment, in 2012, of the European Day of the Righteous by the European Parliament. The date of March 6 was chosen because it coincides with the day he disappeared Moshe Bejski, Israeli magistrate, Holocaust survivor and the man who animated the Yad Vashem Garden of the Righteous in Israel. Both recurrences started with an appeal by Gariwo, the non-profit organization founded in 2001 and chaired by the writer Gabriele Nissim which is responsible for spreading the stories and the message of those who fought in defense of human rights and dignity during all crimes of history.
Who are the Righteous
The concept of Righteous arises from Yad Vashem’s definition of Righteous Among the Nations, that is, “a non-Jew who, without gaining an advantage of his own, risked his life to save that of a Jew, even just one, from the horror of the Holocaust. “; this concept was then expanded to include all the men and women who, in the most tragic moments of history, worked to defend life and human dignity.
Righteous therefore are not the victims or the persecuted, but those who act to save them. The place par excellence to remember the actions of these exemplary figures is the Garden of the Righteous, a space where trees are dedicated.
The day of March 6 is celebrated in the Garden of the Righteous of the World on Monte Stella, in Milan, born on the example of the Yad Vashem Garden in Jerusalem. The Gardens of the Righteous in the world, with the exception of the Israeli one and Yerevan, Washington and Wilmington, were born on the initiative of Gariwo, in collaboration with cultural institutions and local associations, and thanks to the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. To identify To identify the initiatives of 6 March, the forest of the Righteous was designed and built by Gariwo with the handwriting of Marta Mapelli: a tree formed by the keywords related to the day.
In compliance with the anti-Covid rules, the ceremony will be exclusively live streaming on YouTube and will see the participation of the representatives of the Association for the Garden of the Righteous of Milan and of the new honored Righteous
