An important resource that is obtained from the waste of separate waste collection. Here’s how to make and use it with children
You taught your children to do the recycling? To encourage them to do it better and better, you can explain to them all the uses of the compost, the natural fertilizer to be used in the home or school garden to promote plant nutrition.
The experts of the Italian Composting Consortium (CIC) explain to us how to make and use compost with children.
In this article
Why compost is important
The compost it’s a natural fertilizer which is obtained from the transformation of organic waste. Explain to the children the importance of this material which is able to improve the quality of the soil and is ideal for planting trees and shrubs as well as for mulching, the agronomic practice with which it is possible to prevent the growth of weeds and protect the plant. from temperatures that are too high or too rigid.
In addition to maintaining the fertility of the soil, compost allows you to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, at the same time reducing the amount of organic waste to be disposed of.
How compost is obtained
Compost is obtained from Organic waste: that’s why it is good to make children aware of the need to do one correct separate waste collection always keeping in mind what to throw and where.
Create a big billboard in which to write what they are the waste to be thrown away in the organic collection, looking for even the most particular ones, such as corks or the leftovers of dry pet food.
With the wet can be thrown away all food preparation waste, residues and leftovers of any biodegradable organic type. Fruit and vegetable waste, raw or cooked, or vegetable waste such as withered flowers or leaves are very suitable and represent the basis for an excellent compost.
They go instead avoided non-biodegradable waste, or waste contaminated with dangerous, toxic or noxious substances. Glass, plastic, paper, tin or aluminum cans, follow the path of separate waste collection.
Then show the little ones the mark that must be shown on the bags for the collection of wet waste: they must be made of biodegradable and certifiable material, such as paper or bioplastic, and bear the inscription UNI EN 13432.
A sensitivity that you can encourage in children even outside the home: in the supermarket, in fact, biodegradable and compostable products are increasingly frequent.
Let the little ones read the labels on the packaging so that they can buy products that can return to the earth without causing pollution and increased waste.
Prepare the vegetable garden
The compost will serve you for the garden of the house, on the balcony or in the garden. Buy to the little gods dedicated tools, from the rake to the colored watering can (there are also plastic ones), and assign them a part of the garden they will have to take care of.
To facilitate their work, you can prepare a box or a slightly raised pot, without sharp edges. There are no age limits: as early as 2 years old they can start pacioccare with the earth doing practically everything.
Have them choose the plants they want to care for and tell them how to grow and water them. So help them with the planting and transplant operation.
Let them experiment, smear them with their hands in the earth to make them come into contact with nature, explain the difference between good plants and weeds that are to be kept “away”!
It will be a great way to empower them and make them more autonomous.
How to use compost
Then move on to compost, which you can have the little ones use for fertilization, explaining to them that in this way they nourish the plants in a natural way, without damaging the soil with chemicals.
They will have to distribute it on the ground and bury it with a small spade in the first 10-15 centimeters from the surface.
When winter approaches, let him do the mulch, spreading a 3-5 cm layer of compost on the ground, at the base of each plant, to protect them from low temperatures. Have the children repeat the operation every 2-3 months to always have beautiful lush plants.
