Carnival tales for children
Where was born the Carnival and what is its history? This is the period preceding Lent. In view of the austerity of the 40 days of Lent, it was customary to celebrate with a few days of big binges and celebrations.
The Carnival ends, in fact, on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Masks in ancient times had the task of keeping evil spirits away, then they became instead just tools to entertain the people. The tradition of masks has come down to us that today we celebrate Carnival with parades of allegorical floats, disguises, masked parties. Here is a short story titled King Carnival taken from The land of smiling children:
“King Carnevale, strong and powerful sovereign, ruled a vast kingdom with wisdom and supreme justice. The doors of his palace were always open and anyone could enter the kitchens of the palace, stocked with delicious food, and be satisfied at will. But the subjects, instead of rejoicing in having such a generous sovereign, they took advantage of his good heart and little by little they gained so much confidence, as to force the poor king not to leave his palace anymore so as not to be made the object of mockery and insults. he retired to the kitchen and remained hidden there, eating and drinking all the time. But one bad day, it was Saturday, after he had eaten more than usual, he began to feel sick.
Fat as a balloon, with a purple face and a swollen belly, he knew he was going to die; his greed had ruined him. All in all he was happy for the happy life he had led, but he did not want to go away like this, alone, abandoned by everyone, just him, the powerful King Carnival. he remembered then that he had a sister, a beautiful little woman, fragile, slender and a little delicate, (yes, that sister named Lent was really different!) whom he, one day, had thrown out of court. He sent for her and she, generous, ran; He promised to assist him and let him live another three days, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but in exchange he claimed to be the heir to the kingdom. King Carnevale accepted and spent the last three days of his life enjoying himself as much as possible. He died on Tuesday evening and on the throne, as they had previously established, Lent ascended; he took over the reins of the kingdom and ruled the people with harsh and severe laws, but ultimately beneficial. “
Carnival tales for children
During the Carnival period we can replace the usual bedtime story with one Carnival fairytale. Here is an excerpt from The land of smiling children:
“In the heart of the savannah, in a very distant time all the animals that we recognize today by their characteristics, had a very different appearance to the present one. In particular, the giraffe did not have a neck different from all the others, and the elephant had the same height as the other animals. But two very curious incidents occurred. The giraffe had always been meddlesome, and hid in the bushes to listen to the talk of the beasts of the forest. Obviously the giraffe could never keep a secret, and for this reason she was not much loved by other animals. Despite this, the clumsy animal continued to eavesdrop and stretch out its head to spy on everyone. His curiosity, however, was soon the cause of a strange accident: in fact, while one day the giraffe was hiding behind a rock waiting for someone to spy on, seeing no one coming, she craned her neck, and remaining in that position for three hours at the end she realized that her body was c changed.
She had remained so open that her neck had elongated, and it would never be as it was before! So from that moment the giraffe became a very reserved animal, and never again bothered with other people’s business. In the same period, an episode very similar to that of the giraffe took place. In fact, even the elephant, which was a small and slender animal, had a bad habit: he was very greedy, and wanted to be fed, served and revered by other animals. What’s more, whenever no one guarded the supplies, the elephant devoured everything down to the last crumb.
All the creatures, tired of his bullying, gathered in secret and decided to put an end to the oppression of the elephant. Up to that moment, any reasoning had been of no use, so extreme remedies were adopted. The animals, disheartened by the situation, argued for a long time until, by mutual agreement, they decided to teach him a good lesson. Even the giraffe, who had already learned to have respect for others, was in full agreement with the other animals, and all together they invited the bossy elephant to a meadow where they had prepared a rich feast. The elephant had gladly accepted, very happy to be revered by others. But after eating as only an elephant can do, he was served other dishes, and more. Lying on the grass, he felt swollen like a balloon. He could not get up for three days, he had gorged himself so much. The elephant, somewhat battered by that swelling, went to plunge into the pond to freshen up. It was there that, looking at himself in the water of the pond, he saw that his body was all swollen, huge, heavy!
His greed had transformed him forever. When the giraffe saw him treated like that, he consoled him by recounting his experience. Soon it was the monkey’s turn, which at that time was the most vain animal in the forest. The reason for such vanity was his wonderful fur, very similar to that of a squirrel. It’s hard to believe, but his tail was thick and fluffy too! The monkey, full of himself, looked at all the others with an air of disdain, because he thought that no one was so pretty as to deserve to be beside her. Also this time, the animals, disheartened by the circumstance, discussed for a long time, and always by mutual agreement, they decided to give a memorable lesson also to the vain monkey. After building some kind of walkway, each of them got a torch. All together they invited the monkey to do a parade for them, and explained to the silly creature that the torches were used to create the right lights for the show. The monkey immediately took the opportunity to show off his wonderful fur, but a nasty surprise awaited him. In fact, while the monkey was striding, all the animals threw their torches at the wretched woman, who ran towards the pond in order not to burn alive.
When he came out of the water, the monkey had so badly ruined fur that it became the ugliest and most battered creature of the animal genus. In that instant the Lion passed by, the King of all animals, and marveled at that transformation! The giraffe, the elephant and the monkey, had changed their appearance, and were desperate at the thought of never returning as before … … The wise lion, then, tried to find a solution, and so he decided to throw a masquerade party for everyone animals, so that the three foolish friends would not feel out of place. All the animals were happy, and the party was …
