Top 500 most popular first names of 2020
In 2020, Noah is the front runner on the German boy name hit list for the first time. Mia is number one again like almost every year from 2009 to 2016.
The Federal Statistical Office refuses to compile first name statistics because there is no sufficient legal basis for this. In fact, there is a large margin of discretion: should one summarize identical spellings or evaluate them separately? Should one only evaluate the first names of the newborns or also the middle names and other consecutive names?
The first name expert Knud Bielefeld from Ahrensburg (Schleswig-Holstein) systematically collects birth reports from all over Germany in order to determine the most popular baby names. His representative sample for the 2020 birth cohort includes the first names of almost 180,000 babies from 465 different cities, around 23 percent of all children born in Germany in 2020. As far as the evaluation is concerned, Knud Bielefeld decided on what he thought was the best method: a summary of identical spellings (e.g. Sophie and Sofie) and separate ranking lists for first and second names.
In Germany, there are no official statistics on the allocation of first names. This ranking list was determined by Knud Bielefeld on the basis of a random sample – more information on the evaluation method. Commonly used first names are sorted alphabetically and names that sound the same have been grouped together.
