Corona has given Luxembourg a gentle “baby boom”. As the mayors of the Grand Duchy confirmed to us, there have been more births in the Grand Duchy nine months after the first lockdown in March 2020. According to the figures recently presented by the City of Luxembourg, a total of 6,033 births had been registered by the end of 2020. That is nine percent more than in 2019, when the capital had 5536 births. The previous years were at a similar level with 5522 babies in 2018, 5434 babies in 2017 and 5240 babies in 2016.
If you are expecting a child in the near future, you may already be concerned about first names. The city of Luxembourg has revealed the secret of the five most popular first names given to girls and boys: In 2020, the first name Emma was the most popular in the capital, ahead of Lea, Sofia, Zoé and Mia. Gabriel leads the ranking for boys followed by Léo, Louis, Liam and Félix.
