Hit list: Most popular first names 2017
These are the 500 most popular boy and girl names of 2017. Emma, Ben, Sofia and Jonas – the top performers are hardly surprising. Already in the past year she was found on many birth certificates. It gets more interesting in the back seats. Alya, Sunny, Melis, and Clea are some of the curious climbers among the most popular female first names. For the boys, it’s Vito, Kenan and Georgios, who each jumped up more than 200 places.
Unlike other countries, Germany does not keep official name statistics. Registry offices only provide insufficient data. For this reason, we went on a search and, in a team of 10, evaluated birth reports and baby galleries from hospitals and birth centers. This means that we can show around 23% of births in our hit list of the most popular first names in 2017 and provide meaningful statistics. You can find more information about this evaluation here. This list only shows first names, middle names were not taken into account. Status of the evaluation is December 2017.
Every year we create our hit list of the most popular first names. With this we want to identify trends and changes in first names and give you an approach when choosing a name for your baby. But what does it actually mean when a name appears in the top list? How often can he be found in that year?
A first name that can be found in the top 10 occurs about 2% this year. In 1st place it is about 2.5%, in 10th place only 1.5%. This makes it clear that even a top 10 name does not occur alarmingly often and that you can also name your child Ben or Emma.
