Aloha dear Mervis ^^,
I suffered from my name “Merve” for a very long time. For a long time I have been called “Merde” again and again, as well as being described as male. The worst thing I was told over and over again up until a few years ago was: “You’re shitty, you’re shitty and you’re shitty!” The scars of this discrimination are very deep today. For some time I have also been harassed by Turkish people. Most men. Or even offended because I don’t belong to their faith and bear “their” name. It doesn’t matter, even if I explain to him that there are many origins and that Muslims do not have “naming authority”. Sometimes I also get Turkish letters from Telekom, as well as from my Sparkasse. That annoys me. Because I don’t speak Turkish. I myself come from Hungary. I was given the name because it was my great aunt’s name. She probably had better luck with the name. I didn’t have that.
In my experience I wouldn’t name my child that.
The suffering that this name caused brought me my special personality, but also boundless loneliness.
What I like about this name is that it is very international. Both in Celtic, French “Merveille”, Low German/Old German as well as Turkish/Arbian and a modern form is synonymous with the name Mira. The moniker Morphy is funny.
I don’t like the meaning of Merve. Neither being a mountain nor being the “famous” girlfriend” sucks. While I understand Muslim people what they find beautiful about it, I don’t find the story beautiful and very demeaning to women.
Women are not there to find water for men for men, they can do that themselves. Etc.
But: even famous people don’t have friends when they go through great suffering, only when they have “success” do they have sooo many fake friends.
This translation taught me to renounce fame. To fame, honor, money and all that, as well as that I don’t serve any man, let alone any god, simply uncritically and blindly.
I now work as a director in a curative education kindergarten. My children’s names are Isabell and David.
And sometimes I still seriously consider changing that name.
I’ve made my peace with my Merve. If I were to add another name, I would do it simply to protect myself from the suffering that name was still bringing me.
As beautiful as this name is, it is horrible to abuse it to hurt.
If you call a child that, you have to live with the fact that it might not become an easy child, let alone have a good life. But experienced a lot of suffering. And who wants to do a lot of harm to their child? I could not do it. My mother hardly thought anything of it either, she just thought the name was “beautiful”.
Merveille means wonderful and sometimes when someone asks me today: I say: My name is Merve, that comes from Merveille. that is wonderful. Maybe because it’s a miracle that I’m still alive. And I can live with that meaning very well.
