Standard Bearers of the Republic 2021
As every year, the President of the Republic conferred the title of Standard bearers of the Republic to a group of young people who have distinguished themselves in the field of culture, social commitment or sport. In the year of the pandemic, the winners of the President Sergio Mattarella it was the boys who decided to face the emergency firsthand and, in their own small way, devote yourself to others exploiting their own qualities and contributing to the care of citizenship.
What is a Standard Bearer of the Republic?
This title of merit was established in 2010 and represents a Certificate of Honor reserved for underage citizens who have proved so deserving as to inspire a model of good citizen.
«The winners – we read in the dedicated section of the Quirinale portal – distinguished themselves in the study, in cultural activities, scientific, artistic, sports, in Volunteering or have performed acts or adopted behaviors inspired by civic sense, altruism and solidarity “.
This honor is conferred every year by the President of the Republic to a maximum of 30 children under-18 candidates from the community and examined by a commission of the General Secretariat.
The Standard Bearers of the Republic of 2021
In March 2021, President Mattarella awarded the Certificate of Honor to 28 young citizens distinguished for particular merits in the most complicated post-war year, the one characterized by the COVID-19 pandemic which, in addition to plunging the world into a health emergency with few precedents, has increased social inequalities and seriously affected the most fragile categories. Therefore, all the more reason, the winners of 2021 broadcast a message of will and hope which can serve as an example to the whole population. Here are the young winners.
- Silvia Artuso, 9 years old, from Albino (Bergamo)
Silvia, who lives in one of the areas most strongly hit by the first wave, in the most complicated moments of 2020 decided to stay close to her classmates by videotaping herself every day while reading the pages of one of her favorite books. For this show of strength and hope she was the youngest among the Alfieri of 2021.
- Diego Barbieri, 14, from Ceranesi (GE)
Despite the consequences of an accident at a very young age, Diego has become an example of redemption by transmitting his inexhaustible love for the mountains and nature to friends and schoolmates “becoming a witness not only to the paths among the natural beauties but also to important social values “.
- Niccolò Brizzolari, 18, from Rovigo
Niccolò has created an audiobook of Luigi Pirandello’s Uno, niente e centomila in business, offering it free of charge to those who cannot read independently. This commitment in favor of the elderly and in the commitment to environmental issues earned him the Certificate of Honor.

The young Sicilian was rewarded for “the generous commitment and dedication” perpetrated in the volunteer effort during the Covid emergency, where she made herself available to assist the most fragile people in every way.

Also in this case the work of volunteer was rewarded during the weeks of the lockdown when, together with the youth group of Avis, he contributed to the collection of blood to overcome the collapse in donations.
- Lida Michela Carullo, 15, from Vibo Valentia
Lida Michela loves books and has written a novel, Immersed in Chaos (La Rondine edizioni). The certificate of Alfiere della Repubblica is the consequence of his work of promoting literature and volunteering activities.
- Giuseppe Cassano, 16, from Ruvo di Puglia (BA)
In the early stages of the pandemic, Giuseppe rolled up his hands and contributed to “strengthening medical aids and protective tools” in the moment of greatest loss, when resources and means were scarce and inadequate. With his 3D printer, in fact, he created 90 supports for protective visors, which were then used by medical and nursing staff.

“For the intense and spontaneous gestures of fraternity with which she managed to communicate with a classmate, which the lockdown and disability had isolated from the class group and to which Covid tragically took her father away. Alice is a volunteer of the Civil Protection patrol service of the Agesci di Piacenza and in the “hottest” moments of the emergency she coordinated her group of scouts to assist people forced at home and in need.

The young Andre earned the title of Standard Bearer of the Republic for the spontaneous help he offered which allowed the police to track down the person responsible for a road accident in which an 8-year-old child was involved.

Thanks to his digital skills, Francesco was able to create innovative tools also aimed at overcoming social gaps and problems and promoting technology in schools.
