In addition to hand washing, alcohol gel has also gained special attention in the fight against the new coronavirus. According to the recommendation of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, the use of the product is indicated for children over 3 years of age.
Although it has low toxicity, if used in excess, it can pose some risks to the health of the little ones, as they tend to put their hands in the mouth frequently. However, in this current scenario, the World Health Organization suggests releasing the antiseptic with proper adult supervision. Shall we understand it better?
How to use alcohol gel in children?
First of all, it is worth reinforcing that water and soap are essential in preventing the virus. It is necessary to wash your hands for a period of 20 seconds, without forgetting to rub between your fingers, the top of your hands, under your fingernails and wrists.
To teach the little ones about the importance of the act and make it more interesting, it is worth betting on little songs to sing together while you wash your hands.
But what if I need to use the alcohol gel?
It is important that the item is taken in the bag to sanitize the hands of the child when there is no access to soap and water. When applying, it is important that the parents do not let the child out until the alcohol has dried.
If the product is used several times a day and the child makes a habit of putting his hand in his mouth while it is still damp, he may show signs similar to those of adults who have ingested alcoholic beverages, such as dizziness, drowsiness, change of behavior and even more dragged speech.
Watch out for burns!
Alcohol gel in contact with the eyes can leave them tearing, causing irritability, burning and redness, besides the possibility of burning the region in more serious cases.
If so, wash the little one’s eyes with plenty of running water. If the child has difficulty opening his eyes, the ideal is to talk to the paediatrician or take him to an ophthalmologist.
Skin also needs care
For hands, excessive use of alcohol gel may also result in irritability. In this case, it is necessary to be aware of symptoms such as itching, redness and dryness of the site.
If it happens to the child, discontinue use of the product and seek medical help. Depending on the amount the child uses, excess alcohol gel can cause intoxications, although cases are rare. Therefore, it is important to use the product in the right amount and always with the supervision of the parents or guardians!
