The numbers of cancer
Cancer remains an emergency worldwide: in Italy only last year the cancer it caused more than 25% of total deaths and there were about 377,000 new diagnoses, more than 1,000 per day. (Source: Cancer numbers in Italy, 2020 by AIRTUM, AIOM, Siapec and Passi).
As he explains Federico Caligaris Cappio, Scientific Director of the AIRC Foundation, the Covid emergency not only has not put cancer in lockdown, but has had several negative consequences on the progress of research in oncology:
The first on basic research as the activity of the studies conducted in the laboratory has been severely slowed down and indispensable to understand the mechanisms that lead to the development of cancer and its progression. The second on clinical transfer and in particular on studies conducted for the approval of new drugs or new therapeutic strategies for patients. Added to this is the alarm launched by the National Screening Observatory on the postponement of screening with an impact on new diagnoses and a consequent delay in treating the disease. All indications that make us well understand the need to give new impetus to the work of our scientists to recover, in the shortest possible time, the lost ground because cancer does not wait.
The blood oranges of health also in supermarkets
From Thursday 4th February, on the occasion of World Cancer Day, the signs of large-scale distribution and organized distribution take to the field with blood oranges for research available, subject to availability, in over 6 thousand points of sale. The participating companies will donate 50 euro cents to AIRC for each mesh sold. In the year in which the AIRC volunteers will not be able to be in the square due to the pandemic, it will therefore be possible to continue to give strength to the research with the blood oranges of the large retailers. The champions of sport for “health pills”
Carlotta Ferlito, Margherita Granbassi and Claudio Marchisio are the protagonists of the series ‘Health Pills’, a format designed for the web with the aim of promoting some simple tips to keep fit and prevent from champions.
- Claudio Marchisio provides us with precise indications on what to do to follow a healthy diet, the food we consume can in fact affect our health and be a precious ally.
- Equally important is reducing the risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and obesity: Carlotta Ferlito he therefore invites us to be physically active by offering us some activities that we can all do on a daily basis.
- Margherita Granbassi finally reminds us that the smoke it is the risk factor that has the greatest impact on health and that we should all avoid because it causes 85-90% of lung cancers and is also the cause of many other cancers. The videos will be released during the campaign through the protagonists’ social channels and therefore will also be available on the AIRC Foundation YouTube channel.
