After the birth of a baby, taking some photos of him is the best way to have memories of unrepeatable moments. Lorenzo Marcianò Mehwald, a Milanese photographer specializing in images related to motherhood and newborn babies, has suggested some practical tips for taking unforgettable photographs for your little ones.
The birth of a child is an unforgettable moment.
The best way to make your baby’s first days eternal is to photograph him.
But how to do it best? Are there any mistakes you shouldn’t make? We interviewed Lorenzo Marcianò Mehwald, photographer based in Milan and specialized in shots that have motherhood as their theme and babies and families as the main subjects. The artist has come up with some practical tips for us to take great photographs of newborn babies. Here’s what they are.
1. Choose the right time
The ideal time for the first author’s shots is when the children have 10-12 days of life. The baby still retained the fetal position and the umbilical cord was detached. “In this phase he sleeps often, but in the following months he interacts more. The right time to photograph him is when he is quieter, so after a nap and a feed,” says Lorenzo.
2. Create the right condition
To create the perfect atmosphere, put a classical music CD in the stereo and heat the room. The child can pose naked, the important thing is that he is covered enough not to show his private parts. “Instead, choose an ideal position to have good light and prepare everything before he wakes up. Babies smell their mother’s scent and this reassures them. T-shirt worn by the mother shortly before, maybe all night. You can fold it like a pillow “, said the photographer.
3. Focus on the eyes
If you use a smartphone, it is important to focus baby’s eyes. “The blur effect around is obtained by approaching, with the integrated camera, a few centimeters from the small. In this way you will create a pleasant ‘bouquet’ effect. Be careful so that the focus does not escape on unimportant elements”.
4. Eliminate disturbing elements
One of the most difficult things is to exclude from the frame some objects that act as disturbing elements (glasses, toys, saucers, etc.), creating confusion within the space to be photographed. Lorenzo argues that “The easiest solution is to narrow the shot on the face or details. You can also use the ‘bouquet’ effect to blur elements. The focus must be on the little one. Her skin has a neutral color: therefore exclude all colored and decorative elements, instead favor neutral colors (brown, gray, white and black). If you want a more professional result, you can build a small set with neutral cards placed between the wall and table or hang some fabrics on the chairs. This will create a ‘clean’ and ‘studio’ background. “
5. Change your point of view
Better not to photograph children as we are generally used to seeing them, that is, from top to bottom. “The smartphone camera is a ‘small wide angle’ and deforms. Instead, it is better to lower the point of view e center your face in the frame. Make the child the protagonist of your shot. If he is lying on his stomach, do not photograph him from below or from above, but position yourself at eye level “, explains Lorenzo.
6. Pay attention to the light
According to the photographer, the flash is to be absolutely excluded as it can cause damage to the baby’s eyesight. “Instead, use natural light and turn off the lights in the house. The ideal is to take advantage of a window and make sure that the light hits the child on the forehead and in any case not from below. Categorically exclude direct sunlight, better if there is a filter of a white curtain. Position yourself in different points, even against the light, to obtain a delicate profile. Maybe get help from someone who interacts with the child “.
7. What not to do
When photographing a very young baby, it is best to avoid confusion, otherwise the baby will move around a lot and get nervous easily. “It takes a little patience. Also be careful not to create ‘strange poses’, that is, not to make the children come into the picture with their eyes staring upwards while we shoot them from the side. DO NOT use direct flashes , especially if the baby is in the first 4 months of life … “, says Lorenzo Marcianò.
8. If you use a smartphone or an SLR …
It is advisable to avoid spending too much time on the technicalities that make you lose the moment, if you have a smartphone that takes good photos. “If you are using a reflex camera, it is better to use the telephoto lens and open the aperture to create the ‘bouquet’ effect. Use fast times like 1/125 or more, if there is little light rather increase the ISO sensitivity”, says the I photograph.
9. Get their attention
If the baby is not sleeping, let him interact spontaneously. Look for an ‘accomplice’ to distract him while taking pictures. Lorenzo argues that “Whoever has the task of attracting the child’s gaze and attention, can use a smartphone with the screen on: the child will be intrigued. Then slowly make the smartphone move away from the ‘accomplice’, who with a movement of the arm he will have to carry it right behind the photographer’s head. No loud rattles, there is already magnificent classical music. “
10. Where does the look go?
